Google joins Internet biggies Twitter (T.Co) , Overstock (O.co) and Amazon (A.Co, Z.Co and K.Co) today in taking over the G.Co domain name, buying the TLD in order to build the official URL shortcut for Google products like GMail, Documents and Photos. While representatives from the .Co registry wouldn’t comment on the pricing of the deal, .Co-founder Juan Diego Calle recently told Reuters that a single letter domain like G.Co costs more than $1.5 million.http://techcrunch.com/2011/07/18/go...an-official-url-shortcut-for-google-products/

That still won't help the massive amount that will be dropped after year 1.

The drop pattern of a highly speculated TLD is a bit more complex in that the ordinary two year drop cycle (a lot of the drops in year 1 might be reregistered) can spread over five years. The .eu Landrush effect is still causing drops of about 100K on the landrush anniversary each year and its Landrush was in April 2006. There will be .co drops (not sure how many yet) but the real issue for .co registry is getting good levels of development started in .co ccTLD.

This is purely a defensive registration, they won't be branding g.co anytime soon.

Well .ca has a developing ccTLD behind it and people are developing .ca websites for the Canadian market. The .co has been rebranded as a gTLD and does not, apparently, have quite the same level of development yet. These high value sales are misleading because they ignore the wider development problem in getting people to develop websites in a ccTLD and users to become familiar with it and use it.

Well if we use estibot rofl

Google.ca value 34k
Google.co value $20

I believe that is even cheaper than the .co reg fee.

They spent a lot of money on FB.com, but they may follow the trend now that G jumped on board
Strange. I always thought it was Google that tries to copy Facebook. :) I still think that .me is a far better match for Facebook.

Now that I think about it - why wouldnt G also buy F.co? Didn't Amazon buy Z.co to prevent Zappos from acquiring it?

I would think that this may be more useful for 'another type of site'! FB.com makes a LOT more sense for Facebook anyway.
