WTF!!!!!! Is GOOGLE now stopping you from doing more than a few searches within a short amont of time?

This morning, I was looking at results for a number of terms, and was then blocked from entering any more searches. I'm entering them manually - no scripts or any automated processes. Within an hour, maybe I entered 20 to 30 searches, and then got the following message. Anyone else see this...

----------------------------------------------------------
Google Error

We're sorry...
... but your query looks similar to automated requests from a computer virus or spyware application. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now.

We'll restore your access as quickly as possible, so try again soon. In the meantime, if you suspect that your computer or network has been infected, you might want to run a virus checker or spyware remover to make sure that your systems are free of viruses and other spurious software.

We apologize for the inconvenience, and hope we'll see you again on Google.

Nothing liek that came for me . i do googling 20-30x an hr.

if it is really there, then it might some green environment issue?

i was reading in today's newspaper about the emission of COs emittted on each google search made...

might be !

thanx acro!

but why such a restriction , 20-30 searches in 2-5 mins can be understood as abuse (and not always intentional). .... (although the write up in wiki justifies, do not understand a good reason why! )

Scroll down to the Error Messages section.

It says:

"The message may also be triggered by high volumes of different searches from a single IP address. "

That's FU**ING BULL***T!!! I've never seen this message before. I was maybe in the dozens of searches - I don't even think I exceeded 100 (between yesterday and today).

Does it make a difference when you're already logged into a Google (e.g. Gmail) account?

I can be logged in, or logged out - and get the same message. I can't believe I'm being blocked having done only a fairly small number of searches.

As the Wikipedia entry says, the block seems to be removed the next day or so.

That's crazy. If your doing manual searches even if it is like 30 an hour.

Maybe try going through a proxy?
Try unplugging your Internet cable, reboot, then plug it back in in. This should reset your IP from a cable or DSL connection.

maybe?

A day is like an eternity! (when you need to do the research now)

Anyway - I am STILL being blocked from searching in Google in IE7. I opened up a Firefox browser, entered a search, and got blocked again - this time, it asked me to enter a string of characters to "continue searching" (I guess to verify I'm a person and not an automated process) - so after I entered it, I am now able to search Google from Firefox.

That's exactly what I started doing! YAHOO does seem much better since I've used them years ago. (So Google forced me to switch to their competitor - Smart!)

I've also noticed a bunch of flaky things with Google - for example, I might search for something specific, and it might report (for example) 27,000 Matches - then when I page through the listings, the number of page results shrink, and then the number of matches shrinks, to something like 250.

WTF is Google doing. It seems like everything about them is getting worse - OR, is it just me, and does everyone else finds their "upgrades" to be improvements?

Are you logged in to your G account?
Maybe they are doing the custom results based on your usage/searches.

I have to remember to log out when I get into "work mode."
Searches are different when logged in and makes it difficult to see real results.

Whether I'm logged in or not, I get the same results. For example,
I typed in a search (in "double quotes") for "motorhome book"

The results showed: "motorhome book" Results 1 - 10 of about 16,300

Then I scrolled to the bottom, and clicked on page 10,

Scrolled down again and clicked page 19,

Then Google displayed: Results 161 - 162 of 162 for "motorhome book"
and that was the end of the results! So what the hell is it GOOGLE? 16,300 matches, or 162 matches? Something seems really fu**ed up with Google these days.

(It does the same thing even if you click through the pages 1, 2, 3, 4,... and get to page 17. The maximum page number is even different / 17 instead of 19 / clicking one page at a time, not getting to the 19th page)

I know exactly what you mean.
I've seen that many times.

I am guessing Google might be removing relatively same content?

I have this problem before. This is because i used some SEO plugin for FF that do a lot of searches in the background. The ban is removed on the next day.

You're witnessing initial arm flexing by a company nearing monopoly power. I've seen the error and it's bullsht.

I want a search engine that treats me like a customer -- switched to Yahoo and haven't looked back.

One of my friends got the same error a while ago, he was using tool beforehand to use google, and to this day google wont let him pass page 10? Yahoo is great for searching but I use google, as most of my searching is researching competition, and I know I can get a lot more traffic from google a lot easier.

Okay - but I have no SEO plugin or anything else. I simply entered individual searches manually - nothing more that I've always done.

I agree, it is total BULLS**T. I felt like something much less that a customer. As a consultant, I will recommend that my customers advertise on Yahoo before considering Google.

The very idea of google treating me like a customer sounds good, but customers pay for stuff. Google is free. Like most everything they offer. Those Analytics they offer for free, use to cost $1000s of dollars a year to use before google bought them out and said, "Here, use our old competition for free".

I'm waiting for the day when they say it will cost you $0.89 /day to use all the features in your account!

I use a lot of google's feature regularly and somewhat rely (as many internet people in the world do) on them.

Maybe not for a few years, would be bad to do it now given the crisis the world is experiencing, but maybe in the next year.
