http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/04/07/google_trademark/

"Google's path to world domination took a turn for the worse yesterday with news that a small British company has already got the trademark for Gmail"

usegmail.com is the domain they are using.

Sounds crook they can register any $10 domain then pay a few K
for the trademark. These trademarks infringing on domain businesses
should have to be established for 20 years or so.

Anyone holding a domain for future development can lose it to anyone
who regs a trademark in that time.

Google has plenty of money...so they may fight it at first to see where that gets them, then if no good buy it - or perhaps do that anyways.

Another option is for Google to instead market "gmail" as "GoogleMail" and only have the gmail.com domain forward to googlemail.com silently without using "gmail" in any marketing.

Most likely Google will find a way to continue to market gmail.com, even if it ends up costing them a lot - gmail is a nice, simple brand name and already has a great recognition by people even though it's not even open to the general public yet.

Actually, gmail.com forwards to the logical subdomain gmail.google.com, where the actual site is located.
