Google is said to be considering banning newly registered domain names from participating in the Google for Domain Names program, severely hampering the practice of domain tasting.

That's a strange one.

Honestly, I think it won't put a halt on it one bit. There are so many ad providers out there that will be happy to backfill for Google on this one. So many ways to get around it as well.

What Google can do is stop 'Arbitrage'. I wonder the ethics of a company who only reacts to news murmur and then news roar rather than acting preemptively to stop in essence, money being stolen from advertisers.

This is pretty much what PPC is laced with, to a degree. How best to steal money from advertisers in guise of Adsense earnings scams we see all across the PPC landscape!

'Do No Evil' - Please!

Google knows exactly where 'Evil' prevails. They can stop it today if it wants to.

To reiterate what Matt said,
"I think it won't put a halt on it one bit. There are so many ad providers out there that will be happy to backfill for Google on this one." for arbitrage as well.

It's OK with me.

Google is the lead player in online advertising, so this shouldn't hurt them at all.

Notice they say Google may stop it for the "Google for Domain Names program".

But then they mention Oversee.net in the article. Oversee.net doesn't even use the Google for Domain Names program from what I hear/know. They use the Google for Search feed, and well - that doesn't evaluate domain names on an individual basis at all - once again, from my knowledge.

So even if Google does stop it, it doesn't even stop it half way on their own network, let alone the entire industry where we have Yahoo, MSN, Ask, Kanoodle, Looksmart, Miva, 7Search, and the list is HUGE...

What will put a crimp into tasting, particularly automatic tasting, is when one or two big trademark infringement lawsuits gets won on those guys.

`Course many of them are off-shore, but Google is not and that may be why they are getting out.

Google may be the 800lb gorilla in both search and monetization, but let's not forget there is a significant long tail of secondary (and collectively) highly lucrative players more than happy to reward the domain kiting / tasting players.

I'm glad. Repeat tasting is fraud.
