Some quick facts about China:
Far from being a democracy. Annexation of Hong Kong has changed little in the mainland.
Largest source of pirated media in the world.
Largest toxic pollution of water resources in the world.
Chinese products: cheap and of dubious quality. Avoid: Chinese textiles, stuffed toys and steel products.
I don't know how China qualifies to be a big player. They are a big market by sheer numbers but India has more quality and resources.
1. I'm not talking about politics, i live in Singapore, there are brand new BMWs all over the roads, out of 8 cars, 1 is a BMW or a Merc, and we are talking about 150% sales tax on every car so even a 318 costs 100K American dollars (and which might be scrapped after 10 years, by law). Yet, I do not see any democracy around me.
2. As for piracy and cheap products, Japan went through that phase a few decades ago, Taiwan had that in the 80s, and South Korea, the 90s. Today, no one will say Japanese products like their cars are poor quality or cheap.
As for India, i can't comment as i do not know much about India. But i see your point, India receives many times more direct investment than China does from the West, particularly, America. This commie image thing is really quite intimidating - Tiananmen was only not too long ago, a year before the first Iraq invasion. And as a result, the West lost a great deal of opportunities to place it's bets on this emerging market. Most of the infrastructure in China are built by businessmen in Hong Kong and Taiwan and South east asia, and they alone, with meagre resources, managed to kickstart its economy.

-> Look, we are here talking about the future. Present day, they are not a big player yet, but the signs are very obvious it wouldn't take many more years for them to become one.
