Excellent ... in that it will generate much media attention to the domain name business, plus an added bonus of further touting the value of .com domains.

ICANN should consider releasing like only one or so per month, making each release a big media event, to maximize sale price, and further keep the domain name business in the spotlight - doing so benefits registars and domain investors alike; benefits ICANN too.

Cool deal, I had suggested going the public route before and it only makes sense, glad to know that people have their thinking caps on about this one! The reality is though (and question) will it happen? We had been discussing it here before too about the one letter domains and some companies have even applied for trademarks ahead of time in an assumption they would be able to anchor their chances/position at attaining a specific domain, like "G.com" for example by Google...

How can anyone say that those names would only generate 2-5 million? They need to add a zero or two to their estimates. There is absolutely no one-letter domain name that could be had for under 7 figures if the auction was advertised to the public.

It is either a gross underestimate of their collective worth or an average estimated figure that might be obtained for each letter.

I think they will sell for around 1-2 million each on average..thats alot of bread for a domain even if it is a 1 letter...

Totally agree ... assuming ICANN does a staged release of only a few at a time they'll likely fetch 7-figures each easily.

If ICANN does the auction of all them at once, I'm not so sure ... some like A.com will go for a bundle, but likely at the expense of many of the others in a group auction.

I wish they would wait.. I wouldn't mind taking a shot at some of the less popular letters but don't exactly have the spare 8 figures at the moment. I'd bet that most will go for upwards of 8 figures.

Any company that starts with "G" and does not end in "oogle" may as well not bid for G.

Same goes for Y... and possibly M. I don't know if Microsoft cares enough to want m.com.

Then there is a.com, i.com, the one word one character .com's. Based on letter value alone, A would win, but I think the biggest sales would be the G and Y sales.

Talk about your once in a lifetime opportunity.

If Sedo is proposing to conduct the auction without getting any type of commission then their low estimate of proceeds should immediately disqualify them from consideration.

If they plan on taking any percentage at all then it was very dishonest.

I like Sedo and use them with a few hundred names. That estimate of 2-5 million (total) just makes me sigh.

If this auction ever takes place it will be a Watershed Event that brings a ton of publicity.....I don't think there should be a lottery.

If they use the lottery system as Lucas suggested above, why not have an entry fee (per letter) equal to an average domain name registration fee of $7 where anyone who wanted to could enter, with a maximum number of entries set at 5 per person per letter. That idea alone would raise millions of dollars, and would give the masses, or at least 26 of the masses, a chance to then become a millionaire by reselling the domains on the open market. One can only dream......

You are absolutely right. This would be the fairest solution and would raise millions & millions of dollars in entry fees. As a matter of fact it could be argued that ICANN could get more through a lottery than auctioning a domain individually. Every person would be equal in the chance to have a go at getting the domains.

But this will never happen, period. The large corporations that have 'lobbied' ICANN for their respective letter domain will get them.

Mole: It was a proposal made to Icann to avoid an increase in domain registration costs. I don't know if they will even consider the lottery idea as SEDO/Google proposed or even better the altered version proposed here. This should be a good test of Icann's integrity either way.

the single letter domains should be open to anyone worldwide and everyone should pay a sum to be in the lottery for them and allowed to win (1) each max...if they released all remaining single letter domains in .com,.net,.org then maybe this would be 70+ domains...the demand and interest is quite heavy on these domains and it would bring hundreds of thousands of entries, and since the big companies want them so bad then they could buy an unlimited amount of tickets and take their chances with everyone else or just buy the domain from the winner if it was possible, this would be the only fair and just way to ration out these domains, otherwise it's just another big business transaction we are getting left out of by an industry monopoly. Why should they be able to buy a domain at a set price when previously domains in .com,.net,.org are all first come first serve basis? In fact..f*** it, just release them for open registration at some random date and time and let the chips fall where they may!
