According to the International Herald Tribue News "...Google, is in talks to acquire the popular online video site YouTube for about $1.6 billion, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing a person familiar with the matter.
Google and YouTube are still at a sensitive stage in the discussion, the newspaper reported Friday on its Web site. The Web blog TechCrunch has also reported on rumors of the acquisition talks."

My take: It's exactly what Google needs to do as it's own Video site has not been a success.

What's your take on this?

I got a feeling that Google will buy. They need a more popular outlet for selling video ads, and thus belong to the few who can really monetize it.

Though, I'm not at all happy about it myself.

hmmm 1.6 billion... I guess that's a lot right? I mind scrambles when there are too many zeros. I wonder how much youtube makes in one year. How much was myspace sold for?

As youtube uses adsense google know exactly how much renveue they generate. In additon, youtube will be the perfect plattform for thie new videos ads, as already ,mentioned by octobus.
Considering the age of the website, the 1.6 billion is a breath taking amount. Just hope one day it will be one of my websites, selling for a similar amount ;-)

Then they would have to aquire the domain gootube.com too ;-)

Great deal for Google! I don't think it will be much of a problem because gootube.com is a simple parked page which could be bought by Google from owner for $$$!

They're gonna call it GooTube.
Really:lol:

Not sure if that is a joke, but I find it truly funny.

I mean that has a "adult" sound... :censored: tube

I just saw this story from Sept 28th, and now that Google has bought YouTube, indirectly Mark Cuban has called them "Morans"

From the article:
"High Tech Billionaire investor and dot-com veteran Mark Cuban had harsh words on Thursday for YouTube, the online site that lets people share video clips, saying only a "moron" would purchase the wildly popular start-up.

Cuban, co-founder of HDNet and owner of the NBA's Dallas Mavericks, also said YouTube would eventually be "sued into oblivion" because of copyright violations.

"They are just breaking the law," Cuban told a group of advertisers in New York. "The only reason it hasn't been sued yet is because there is nobody with big money to sue."

YouTube, based in San Mateo, California, specializes in serving up short videos created by everyday people. Its popularity, with more than 100 million video showings daily, has spurred speculation the firm will be sold or taken public."

I think he's got a good point. Google has just painted themselves with a big target. YouTube was losing money and the potential plaintiffs new that. Now the lawsuits will come in so fast that Google will need to hire an air traffic controller.

YouTube might go the way of Napster.
