Yesterday Google posted about a new and improved search index they are working on:

http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2009/08/help-test-some-next-generation.html

This (as a WIP) can be accessed at:

http://www2.sandbox.google.com/

Just wondering if you've tested it out, and whether your sites rank higher or lower than the old ones?

For me things seem slightly different, but nothing major. Plus the new search queries seem to be completed in around 0.15 seconds, whereas with the current system they are taking slightly longer at 0.26 seconds.

Will be interesting to see whether this has any real differences. I've always loved the way Google search results come back (Google seems to know exactly what I was thinking/looking for when I ran a search :tongue1:) so hopefully that aspect of it won't change.

Yep, that's what I was sort of thinking. Perhaps just to keep attention away from Bing?

In a way they are kind of pulling from Bing's current strategy. Bing at this early stage is all "fluff", and very little innovation. If you cross compare G's results with Bing's, it's pretty clear that Microsoft is ripping and feeding off of G's index and sorting structure. It's so blatant in some serp sets, that I'm surprised Google isn't taking legal action.

I was rooting for Bing right up to the point that they killed off Yahoo. I believe Google will defeat Bing, and that means 1 search engine. Microsoft is the 0.99 cent cheeseburger of technology, while Google has serious search game.

I quite agree, nice views/post :) Yeah, I was rooting for Bing at first, although it's nothing special. It does seem like Google, but a "Web 2.0" version of it.

Well, that and the fact that Bing stick "Beta" below their logo

But yeah, it's interesting times, although I can't see Google losing anything in the short/medium term.
