Just received this AM re. domain-name:

Electrochemistry.info

"I understand you are the owner of this domain. If so, are you interested in transferring it & for how much ?

Best Wishes,
xxxx yyyyyy
zzzzzzzz Sudbury, Suffolk , CO10 9AP, UK"

Would appreciate your input as to how much should I let it go for?

I would tell him that you planned to develop it...but you just have not had the time. You might consider selling it and to make an offer.

Well thats what I did (sort of). The question now is what would be a reasonable selling price for the name regardless of the potential buyer's capacity to pay? Any thoughts?

Just got this:

"Dear Mr Ghafoor,
I would offer $ 1,000 . If you are interested- we can do the transfer quickly and easily using the facilities of www.escrow.com

Best Wishes,
XXXX XXXXXX"

Should accept immediately or counter-offer say $1.5/2K??

I understand that's the impulse. But the guy initiated the inquiry and this is his first ("best") offer. I've sold .INFOs (half a dozen so far) any where from $1K to above $5K (I know this is not a $5K name). I'm tempted to counter by something like $1600 plus escrow fee!

Ask for what you feel it is worth, plus a bit, in case of haggling! :)

1.5k sounds resonable to me. I think you have a very good name.
Unless your strapped for funds, I'd stick to my guns on the price you set, whatever that is! I had an offer a couple years age on a name for $1000. I told them I wanted $2,500 or I won't sell, and they paid it. Don't under estimate the value of .info. The Tld. is irrelavent. If they want it, they will most likely pay it. Let us know how it pans out.

Good Luck, Gary T

Heat - The tough thing here, is that you don't know who is doing the asking.

Is it an individual that likes the melodious sound of the name, or is it some attorney, representing a huge comglomerate, that has big plans for the name, and the acquisition is critical to their plans.

Someone may whine about costs of a name, while their real budget for name acquisition is in the tens of thosands of dollars.

Given the possible serious importance of this name, and field, I would suggest $5k plus costs, and see what the reply is. Those folks with deep pockets don't come knocking very often, when they do, it's time for some profit taking.

If you need to sell, look for closer to $1k.

Good Luck!

It doesn't matter who the potential buyers is,*especially* should they be in any way kind of wealthy.
Just because you can't look into a person's head and see what's going on there. The fact someone got big money or its a big company has nothing to do with if they're willing to spend a single cent more than what they initially were willing to pay or not.
Common misconception to think someone might pay more just because they seem to have money.

Beatz - I don't think experience would bear that out.

Corporations that need a name in many cases have no idea what its "worth" is. They just need it, period. Someone within the organization has been given the responsibility for establishing the firm's online presence. They have to reg a name, and acquisition cost is not a nickel and dime process.

Even the experts among us are often surprised by the high, or maybe low numbers, that a name sells for. If you offer every name you have for $6.95, that's exactly how much you'll make.

You didn't get the point.
It is that sure *some* people might be willing to pay more than what they offered initially but sure enough *some* people might not and in fact just back out if yiu try the back-and forth game too much.
Basically i'm just saying if you think you should ask for a higher price, fine, just to do that on the basis of you guessing the buyer might be a rich company or alike has no promising grounds.

Heat:

I believe that the facts you present make it a very EASY choice.
Do I have it correct:

1). 12/13/02 your received an inquiry asking if you would and how much?

2). But before you replied, on 12/16/02 you were offered $1,000?

If so, I read it that with 75% certainty - he is a buyer and told to get the domain. I also know that value of the domain, but that is irrelevant if I read this correctly. Negotiate assuming that you have the upper-hand! I would counter-offer high $2K+. It is just my gut.

Good luck

Thanks William for your (like always) insightful input. The only piece you're missing is that on 12/14, I did reply indicating that the name is not formally on sale and that he/they can make their best offer and I'd let them know if thats acceptable. Anyway, I've countered with $1800 plus escrow; lets see what happens!

Well done Heat. I still read this as a strong industrial buyer. You have a win.

Good luck.

hmm, I think a good clue here to the buyer is that they are familiar with using escrow.com for domain transfers.

So they are someone that's bought atleast one domain before, that was high ticket enough to warrant using escrow.com.

$1000.00 is pretty nice, realistically, how much more could it be sold for before the risk of losing this customer becomes substantial due to counter-bidding?

I have a lot less experience here than most, but I think $1000 is a plenty great price for that name.
