Out of 7 visible wireless networks in my area, one is wide open. Free laptop surfing on the back of someone else's DSL connection :D LOL

Cool, just keep in mind that you can get in trouble if you get caught. Believe it or not, it's not legal to use someones internet connection even if they have an unprotected wireless router.

I had some trouble setting up my wireless LAN this weekend after a change in hardware; obviously I don't go around looking for open spots. But it's interesting to see so many in my area and I find the percentage of open wireless networks - 1 in 7 - rather small.

This is true, but I believe the law is as long as a wireless connection is unsecure and you are not taking their traffic logs, you are not violating any legalities.

That's what firewalls are for :)

I think it's because Bellsouth's default router settings are wide open.

There's certainly a lot of money to be made installing WiFi for people and businesses. You can get $200/hr for that in the UK. And 99% of the adopters don't have a clue about e.g. 192.168.1.1 etc., let alone configuring the parameters.

First time I ever set up WiFi I would have gladly paid for the BS I went through. Linksys router. Nothing worked. Followed directions to the letter. Spent hours setting everything up...rebooting, reloading, reconfiguring, yada, yada, yada.

Finally called tech support. First thing he said? Throw the software away. It's useless.

The good old days of b. Now I can set these things up in a snap, install cards, and breeze through this. People are amazed. The key? Do one correct and the rest is just repitition.

I'm not affiliated with this company just thought it went well with the topic

Do your neighbors steal your wi-fi? Want them to pay? Well now you can with Wifitastic, the perfect solution for wi-fi banditry and wi-fi exploits. The idea behind this service is that you’ll be able to generate some money from your broadband connection by setting up a hotspot.

Homeowners can charge their neighbors at a fixed rate—monthly, hourly or daily access, fees are up to you. Wifitastic will pay you 60% of what people pay to connect.

I don't like the idea of using public/insecure Internet connections.
If I wanted to sniff neighbors' traffic I would just do that: set up a rogue wifi station and tap the data.
