I'm starting a new member-based website and an contemplating domain names.

I have a great .me domain and it's really hard to find a decent .com domain for my purpose.

Should I go with .me? What about SEO? The target audience is USA.

Thanks!

Google doesn't care about the extension for ranking purposes.

Good SEO, excellent content, great promotion, backlinks, and good traffic, are what matter.

If you can't afford a .com that is good enough to bring in natural type-in traffic, then focus on a great Keyword, in whatever extension.....If you have a great, memorable, descriptive, Keyword (in .me, or whatever) - then, build your site on the .me - and, promote it everywhere relevant. Should do okay...

Really? I was always under the impression that .com had the upper hand in rankings? I know at least that country TLDs have an upper hand in ranking by searches in those countries.

Nope - for years I had a .org that outranked a .com with SEO (the owner of the .com disbanded his site and I picked it up in a drop). I've also had some .us and .info domains beat out the .com domains in results.

Not at all. It's just that .com sites tend to be older and more established in the search engines. If I can't get a good keyword in .com I will look at other extensions.
