I'm no newbie to the internet, but I am new to buying and selling domains. I think I'll start off trying to figure out the value of some of my existing domains. And then keep learning...

Montreal! I ve been there twice.
First time was when I got born!
Welcome to domaining world!
Dont feel its too late because it aint.
Stay away from new cctld's.
Try to use expiring/dropping services to acquire .com domains because they can give you a quicker roi.(roi=return of investment).

What he said.

Also, don't be afraid to make lowball offers on names. The reality is that many names with $1,000 asking prices were registered for $8.00 by its owner. Thus, a $100 offer is a $92 profit to them. Sure beats sitting on it asking for $1,000.

As a Canadian, you should be aware that .ca names are worth significantly less than their .com counterparts. Just because Slots.com sold for $5,500,000 (which was a recent sale), doesn't mean that the .ca is worth anywhere near that. It recently sold for $200,000, less than 4% of what Slots.com sold for.

When it comes to making money, the passive money is in monetizing your domains (building blogs, affiliate stores, etc.). A great service which provides site development with content and SEO is called Content Mini Sites (www.contentminisites.com). If you want an affiliate store (which is great for product domain names), Site Depot (www.sitedepot.com) does it for $150 a store. They've thrown together some great stores.

If you want fast, lump sum money (this is what I do), go for end user sales. Estibot (www.estibot.com) allows you to, upon entering a domain name for appraisal (the dollar value has little meaning in the way of what you could realistically get for the name), choose the option "Help me sell this domain name", which generates leads for you. I've gotten a few easy sales this way.

I'd like to welcome you to the domaining community. You've made a wise discovery, and I wish you the best of luck in your domaining endeavors!

P.S. It's my advice that you upgrade to a Platinum membership so that you can participate in the majority of the forum's discussions. The exclusive membership does have its benefits, the main one being that you can put affiliate links in your signature. One of our members, HOPE has earned over $1,000 in the past 4 years with his affiliate links in his signature. Didn't even need to promote it (asking users to click on affiliate links in your signature is against the rules anyway!). Remember, this site gets over 80 million views per month (nearly 2,000 views every minute) which is ample opportunity for viewers to make you money off of your affiliate links!

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone. And thank you for the advice too. I'm doing OK with monetizing domains by building affiliate sites. That already makes me a strong 5 figures annually. But I do want to learn more about selling domains...and then buying and selling. grcorp -- really appreciate the detailed tips. And I'll check out the Platinum membership deal.http://www.dnforum.com/member-grcorp.html

Salut!

Greets from a fellow Montreal-area domainer (and IT architect, sysadmin and passionate about all things IT) ...

Your approach to monetizing domains by developing them and getting $ through affiliate programs is great ; we do it ... it certainly beats parking in our experience.

Have you explored niche domains - in particular French ones?

Cheers,

Rob

Rob, hi

Thanks for writing. No, I have never done anything with French domains. How does that work? What do you do with them?

Hi Nick,

There's a DNForum French language domain forum which seems to be used more for listing French domains for sale than for actually discussing domaining in French, but it's worth keeping an eye on. Mind you, French domains are also being listed in the general domain for sale forums, but with French or français in the thread title.

I would say that the French domain market is several years behind in terms of maturity (and also, opportunity)... so there are many interesting domains either available directly for fresh registration or at significantly lower aftermarket pricing than their English equivalents.

For the moment I would say that it's best to develop a French domain than to just try and sell it or even park it. If you can speak/write French this is a big advantage ... keep in mind that there is more than just Quebec and France to target...

Cheers,

Rob
