I haven’t been too kind or considerate to ICANN’s new gTLD program since its inception. I have regularly questioned the sanity of a decision to flood the market with thousands of new TLDs that are bound to bewilder the public at large. In discussions private and public, I have dismissed the TLDs as another attempt [...]

I think that the belief that the gTLD program is a "threat" to
'domaining' is to show a lack of understanding about domains
and what they represent.

I say, the more extensions there are the better! ..and when
large brands buy in to them and then get burned, because
they've confused their marketplace/customers then it will
probably drive up .com prices even more.

I wouldn't say that the consternation has been due to the 'threat' posed to domaining; it has been due to the threats posed to domain name values.

While you might say that more TLDs will drive people to .com even more, I would like to believe that the opposite might happen: a more crowded marketplace will compel the best-seller (dot com) to be a little more aggressive to be noticed. I've already seen a number of startups eschew the .com route to purchase domain hacks and extensions such as .co. This will only increase as a greater number of TLDs become available.
