To our friends in the gulf, specifically the New Orleans area - please be careful. Right now New Orleans is right smack dab in the middle of the 120 hour cone:

they expect him to be a cat 3 but I think that could be a cat4 since the conditions in the gulf coast are good for development.

Please, take the time NOW to prepare and don't procrastinate.

Be safe out there.

You know Ed at some point you have to ask yourself if its worth living in an area where storms like this appear on a yearly/biyearly basis. Its seems like people are constantly rebuilding their lives in places like New Orleans especially since it sits below sea level. The Government either needs to build New Orleans up so its above sea level or just move the people further back in Louisiana and forget about New Orleans all together. Its time to stop throwing billions of dollars into rebuilding programs if your not going to deal with the underlining problem itself.

Sorry for the rant. I too hope that everyone has prepared for the coming storm and they remain safe as well.

Where in the world doesn't have natural disasters, though? In south Florida, yes, we get tropical cyclones, even strong ones but we build back up. Andrew, while devastating really helped south Florida with new coding requirements thus saving lives and property damage when the next large ones hit.

The thing is that not only do a lot of people not have insurance, the government gives them handouts for not having insurance (after Wilma we qualified for a lot less assistance since we had insurance). People will continue to live in nice areas, such as New Orleans. It won't be easy to build it up but they could strengthen the levees and/or redevelop the whole area to be less flood resistant (raise some of it and allow others to be an overflow area).

Three years to the day and they might see a Category Four hurricane bear down on them? Time for CONCRETE levees!

All of our hotels in central Louisiana are already booked by folks from South Louisiana who may be called to evacuate. Naturally, the casino hotels were the first ones booked.

The real problem we had during Katrina here in central Louisiana was traffic was 10-20 mph on every state road even though we are three hours from New Orleans. Vehicles were stranded everywhere around here because the gas stations were completely sold out and empty for 250 miles in any direction from New Orleans. Of course, us locals got our gas early for our generators, trucks and tractors.

Sadly, because we are a state where our southern border touches the Gulf, our insurance rates tripled as we continue to pay for those who live on the coast.
