What is wrong with the world today?

http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/11/05/haggard.allegations/index.html

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (CNN) -- Evangelical pastor Ted Haggard confessed on Sunday to a "lifelong" sexual problem, and said he was "a deceiver and a liar," in a letter read to his New Life Church.

"There is part of my life that is so repulsive and dark that I've been warring against it all of my adult life," he said in the letter.

Haggard apologized to his congregation and asked for their forgiveness in the letter read by pastor Larry Stockstill, a member of the board of overseers of New Life Church.

On Saturday, the board ousted Haggard from the 14,000-member church, which he founded more than 20 years ago, citing his "sexually immoral conduct."

Haggard had previously admitted that he bought methamphetamine and got a massage from Mike Jones, a former prostitute. Jones said the prominent pastor had paid him for sex over a three-year period. (Watch what led to Haggards firing -- 2:40)

Haggard, in an interview with CNN affiliate KUSA denied having sex with Jones and said he did not use the drug and threw it away.

In the letter read Sunday, Haggard took responsibility for his actions, saying "I am guilty of sexual immorality" and noted that "the things I did opened the door for additional allegations."

He asked the congregation to also forgive his accuser, who Haggard said has revealed "the deception ... that was in my life."

In a separate letter from Haggard's wife, also read by Stockstill, Gayle Haggard said while her heart is broken, she remains "committed to him until death do us part."

An overflow congregation responded to the announcement with a standing ovation.

Haggard, 50, and his wife have five children.

Haggard initially denied knowing Jones. His admissions Friday sent shock waves through evangelical circles, where many leaders had rallied to his defense when the allegations surfaced earlier in the week.

He resigned as president of the National Association of Evangelicals, an umbrella group representing more than 45,000 churches with 30 million members. ..<more>

A repentant sinner is better than a liar

It reminds me of someone I knew...... After years of marriage left his wife and went for the whole gender change...

Not me before anyone asks....

Religion itself is not the problem, it's the co-opting of relgion by scammers and ego driven politicians that's the problem.

What's amazing is the interviews that he gave when this first broke. In the first interview he denied even knowing anyone by that name (name of the male escort or of ever buying or using meth) ...then the next day when confronted with audio evidence of voice messages left on the male escort's voice mail he admits that he did get a massage from that same escort and did leave voice messages regarding meth...lol, he goes from denial of knowing the guy to admitting the very next day that he got a massage and bought meth from him. All this from a guy that was on conference calls with the Whitehouse on a weekly basis...

Didn't someone say "to err is human, to forgive is divine"? (or something like
that...)

It can be summed up in one word: RELIGION

Consider that if this guy wasn't some religious leader this wouldn't even be news. He didn't do anything millions of other people haven't done. He just fooled a whole lot of people along the way. A lot of people are driven to religion when they are scared of their own physical desires. Sometimes simple stuff like drugs, or gay sex, sometimes really bad stuff.

They think their religion will help them bury their desires. A lot of times it doesn't.

It's not really fair to blame religion for the actions of those who subvert it for their own means. Of course religion is often used as a tool by people for many different reasons. When you see a person or group using religion for purposes of power or money, you really have to realize they are not religious, they are people pursuing power and money. If criminals were dressing up as police officers to commit crimes, we wouldn't say that they are really police officers and the police are just bad.

But most religious people I know are simply very good people. Maybe boring, but typically good.

I just don't understand why it is always the religious figures that get tried/convicted of sex crimes? Priests and little boys, etc.
