Has anyone who is buying .mobi actually ever used the internet on a phone?
My personal experience is that Bookmarks and copy /paste are the method of web navigation on a phone
I would hardly ever type in a URL into a phone even if I know it
If I couldn't copy/paste it or find it from a link, I would google a bit of it to save on the typing and then click
Didn't I read on the .mobi official site somewhere that it is a temporary soliution only to allow developers time to upgrade so that their sites recognize a phone browser and redirect to a phone coded web site?
I just don't understand why ppl want to spend money on .mobi
Any why in the world didn't they call it .cell ?

I cannot believe there will be any endusers at all, or PPC , or a resale market to other sellers after the initial rush
I am willing to learn though and change my mind if anyone without a vested interest in selling/reging .mobi names can post why ppl are spending their money on .mobi
And I realize that pool operates a system where $1 is not always $1 because of affilialte commissions awarded to buyers on their own buys.

LOL... I've made posts to THIS FORUM from my Cell Phone :)

I use it all the time.... the only drawback is that currently, phone users get charged airtime when on the 'net. If Cell Companies curb that a bit, or charge a different rate for "data minutes" versus "talk minutes" then I think many more people would use their cell.

Also, it's really only more recently that cell phones have come to the place where solid electronics exist to support general internet browsing. Give it another year, now that MOBI is released, and I think you will see the newer phones, much like my vCast phone, coming out with QWERTY keyboards, bigger screens, more features and better internet.

All you need to make mobi work is the support of the manufacturers. MOST of which are the financial backers of the ext.

i own mobi domains, and all bias aside, one reason it *could* be different from the other new TLDs are the sponsors.. microsoft? google? ericson?

we got the software maker, a couple cellphone manufacturers, and google the search engine giant.. they can change the way things currently are. one reason people (including myself) dont understand what .mobi is and why these companies would spend money on what appears to most people to be a waste of money on a useless new tld is because no advertising or phones with .mobi on them have been released.

it could fail. but it appears that it has a higher chance of doing well with the kind of corporate backing it has.

i heard, they didnt name it .cell because the registry is not based in the usa. i guess they call it a "mobi" some places, as weird as that sounds.

One factor playing into my speculation on .mobi is not where phone and handheld devices are, but where they may go. I agree that navigation on most cell phones is a pain. But with a few dedicated buttons, scrollers, and voice activation of favorite sites we'll have a much improved experience. And when the displays get bigger/better, and they will, then we'll have a nice step up that will make it practical to use phones for internet access.

I am guessing significant developments are going on behind the scenes because of the large corporate players involved.

what most of you have no clue!! the future of telecomunication industry is in a rapid change. Technology in 10 years will blow your mind away ; cell phone will have more purpose than just a phone call.

My point is that here in Australia I can already use a mobile ( cell ) phone to browse on the internet, and have been able to for some years already.
I am not charged by time
It is very fast anyway and my phone keyboard is qwerty.
Nevertheless I would hardly ever type in a URL, so the extension of the URL is just plain irrelevant to someone using a wireless phone to navigate the net.
It is a very different experience surfing the net on a phone compared to doing it on a PC. I have yet to see anyone touch type on a phone keyboard , qwerty or not. Bookmarks and links rule surfing on a phone
Maybe the supporters of .mobi like microsoft etc just want to make some money selling domain registrations
There seems to be no shortage of people prepared to give them the money in the possibly vain hope of finding an end user
Anyway, good luck to the .mobi investors
It is probably a shrewd investment, and I am just confused by dot com web sites that work fine already on phones

its true browsing on a phone is no problem now or websites can be made to recognize mobile phones. i dont understand *why* they came out with a new TLD for this, but if these big boys look like theyre going to change software and some of the hardware, thats all i needed to hear to grab some mobi's for safe keeping.. they got the dollars to make it happen, whether it makes sense or not..

will it catch on? who knows.. but it could, they are big big companies. im less worried about *why* theyre doing this and just noticing the simple fact that they are doing it. which gives this tld a better chance than say, .biz

on a side note.. i dont think microsoft, google, ericson or of the sponsoring companies are making money off people simply registering .mobi's... they want what comes next after .mobi has been established and registered and official.

BTW, I use my phone to surf frequently. The experiece has been horrible! That's why we need .mobi and its standards.

One of the biggest issues with using a cell phone on the web is the tiny screen and keypad.

Once holographic technology improves so we can use a large floating holographic keypad keyboard along with a good size holographic image the use will no doubt increase substantially.

P.S. DomeBase has a very informative forum on holographics here: http://holoforum.com/

I always noticed that microsoft, google, ericson... do Not enter any game to loose. If they are together so, this perception is much more solid. Also, "just registering domains" is a drop in the ocean for them, and certainly this is not their goal but what comes after that. My bet is that it IS going to work, even decades from now with much better phones, technologies and everything else, maybe something we don't even imagine, who knows. Google appeared from nothing just a few years ago. However, I just have 3 .mobi domains in my specific area to be cautious in a first moment...

There is a good likelihood that even before .Mobi starts getting some serious business usage it would become the next "HIP" thing among younger mobile surfers. I won't be surprised at all if in a relatively short period of time we'd see a .Mobi based site similar to MySpace. Given a choice, the youthful crowd would much rather surf the net while on the go and anywhere they are than being tied down in front of a desktop screen with parents constantly nagging at them to get off and go back to their studies....talking here from personal experience having two teenagers myself...!! The mobile carriers would have to find a way (and most likely they would) to make it easier for youngsters to use the mobile web in terms of the cost issues.

We are in the stone age of the mobile internet right now.

For "I Sold Grandma" (thread starter) you have to think ahead. Think about what voice activated typing and selection of bookmarks will do for wifi connected phones that seemlessly sync to our home computers simply by putting our cell phones near our desktops.

How long have camera phones been around? How long has MySpace been around? How long has YouTube been around?

Dot mobi is TWO WEEKS old!

Now do you see what .mobi can be?

I should be hired as the .mobi evangelist! I find it funny that domainers, such entrepreneurial and forward thinking people, can doubt the wireless internet explosion that is right in front of us.

The principle of .mobi is that all .mobi sites will work on a mobile phone, so users can direct navigate (thats what PPC runs on) when using the mobile internet, and it is likely that .mobi addresses will be prefered and thereby at the top of search results when using a mobile device...

I have spent the last 7 years solely focused on the mobile internet, so at times I find it hard that some "old school' types can not come to grip with what is coming!
