For sure it is a great name, but maybe the price is a bit high, isn't it ?

Hm, it looks like they spent $12M for the domain name only, because they want
to use it with their already existing websites vegas.com, if I understand it right.
Well, if it's $12M only for the domain, then this will be the highest amount ever
paid for a domain name... Maybe we'll get some more information shortly.

yeah but its not a sale it seems to be a lease more several years?
Greenspun and Stephens did not disclose terms of the agreement, but Lefkowitz said the length is "in the decades." The lease price also was not disclosed, but when the deal was in litigation, Greenspun offered $12 million for rights to the site name.

also there is older thread about the 12mil offer at http://www.dnforum.com/showthread.php?t=68382

From what I gathered VEGAS.com is leasing LasVegas.com for several decades. The amount that VEGAS.com is paying to lease LasVegas.com was not disclosed. It was said that Greenspun offered $12 million for the rights to the domain but that is all. It was nothing more than an offer.

Q and A with Brian Greenspun re LasVegas.com

Q;Is LasVegas.com profitable and is it the plan to make it your company's main Web site since it has a more intuitive Internet address?

A:Is it profitable? I haven't the slightest idea. I know it's expensive. Ask me a year from now if it's profitable or two years from now if it's going to be profitable. We've taken a major risk in acquiring the license to LasVegas.com. We felt it was important to have it. We have VEGAS.com, which is the other intuitive name. Having them both gives us some scalability. It gives us the opportunity to market the two intuitive names. Whether they're going to be profitable, it's far too early to tell. I think there's a future. In terms of it being the more intuitive name, you'll probably get a fight with our folks at VEGAS.com. They tell me the young people say "Vegas" and the old guys like me say "Las Vegas."
