one thing-
not all deals are publicized.
I have sold .nets for over $10K
It would take an army for me to reveal those names.
It's not so much the problem of the after effect, where newbies reg every possible tld just because a domain was sold for a certain amount, thats fine, it only increases the value of a good solid gTLD. It has to do with the market itself.
There is a lot that can not be seen...
Seek, and you shall find. :)

Here you go:

KT.net - $12,500 + 2 domain names (a .com which bears a well-known provincial city name in Japan and a two-letter .net) in Dec. 2001

Pills.net - $5,000
Kissing.net - $4,000
Modems.net - $3,000
Refinancing.net - $2,000
Actress.net - $1,400

(though it's not the same significance for net name to be sold for 5k in 1998, or in 2004.)
