if u believe a domain has been hijacked is there anything you can do. i have been following a domain for months. the owner is unreachable. the company went out of business. it wouldnt have dropped until after the summer. today i see it has a new owner and new registrar.

if it is a case of hijacking this type of thing has to be stopped

it is always possible, but for a guy in
Vukovarska to find the owner of a us company no longer in biz, i find it strange.

i recently had a highjacked name, and have seen an increase in strange activity in the whois.

Do you know the previous owner or are you in the same industry?
Was the domain in the previous owners name? Maybe someone did a whois search and fired off an email or looked at an archive of the site and figured out who the owner was etc. etc.
You said he is unreachable. Is he in prison or something or were you trying to call and email to no avail?

Really nothing you can do about the hijacking unless it's your name. Actually really wouldn't make any sense to do anything about it as it doesn't really benefit you with regard to the name.
Maybe continue to contact the guy it was snagged from and go from there.

Good luck

This isn't directed at anyone on here persay, but
I have to say Im sick of people thinking every new name transfer is a hijacking. conspiracy theory run amuck.

Everytime I buy a good new name, some nut job will write me and ask stupid intrusive questions about how i got the name...same goes when i used to sell fairly good names, the poor new owner would be bombarded by twits.

Too many nutty, nosy people with no lives in the domain rereg biz.

Some are down right scary theyre so obsessed.

So say the email I own is the admin contact for a domain and I initiate a transfer on such a domain that can no longer be accessed by anyone due to incorrect contact information. Is there really anything wrong with this? Wasn't it their obligation to maintain correct contact information to begin with?

Is it OK to steal a car because the door is not closed properly?

I'm sure a lot of domains drop because the admin contact lost his/her/their email somehow, somewhere.

That's why grabbing dropped domains can be classified as "stealing" in a way.

But I agree, losing your admin email contact without bothering to do anything about it is irresponsibility at its highest where domains are concerned.

Here I cannot agree - "stealing" implies an "unlawful" act designed to deprive the "lawful" owner of something. If a name drops then it has been through the "lawful" routine of expiry and redemption period and the owner has the opportunity to renew, having been reminded by his or her registrar.

On the other hand, using an obtained email address to take a name that is currently active and in use by another is clearly theft. I am currently involved with the UK police, the FBI and the police in another country concerning the theft of domains which were subsequently sold to me by a Platinum member of this board. These names were obtained in this same way, ie obtaining an admin email address and "unlawfully" transferring them away from the owner's account.

It might have seemed clever at the time but by weeks of research and investigation I have been able to clearly identify the trail of the names and identify the Platinum board member concerned - the files are now with the UK Police and that Platinum member will soon find out just how clever those thefts really were.

Is a domain considered property? I mean you technically don't really own it since you just pay to use it each year. It would be nice if you could pay a single price and own the domain for life. This would avoid a lot of current problems. Course it introduces a lot more. :D

So if I rent a TV and you steal it that's okay since I only rented it?

Just to clarify - whilst police investigations and prosecution is ongoing I will not be identifying who this person is, nor will I be saying who it isn't as a process of elimination.
I will in the circumstances say that Gregr does not feature in the investigation and I would be grateful if nobody else puts forward any individual's name, as this could cause them embarassment.

a couple of things

1 - in this post it has been talked about using an old admins email to change domain info. Just to clarify , this is illegal and there have been WIPO decisions on this.

2- domain names have been hijacked in other ways. I recently noticed a name change in one of my major domains, a domain that gets thousands of uniques daily. Netsol was so nice to change owners without asking me. Thank god for lawyers like ari goldberger.

3 - does anyone know where Vukovarska is and if any member of this forum is from there. I will be researching the domain I believe was stolen and alert the police if the facts prove so.

Vukovarska is in Croatia, don't know if any members are from there - perhaps ask admin (doubt they will tell you) - though be prepared for false information on the whois.
