Excited to say that I have accepted a temporary teaching position at a hospital in Houston, Texas. I leave Tuesday and contracted through the end of May.

So I guess I'll be pulling for the Texans to beat the Patriots today. When that happens, the AFC championship game will be at the Houston Reliant stadium.

I do not own a bolo tie, cowboy boots, or a ten gallon hat. I bet that won't last too long.

I remain doubtful that Texas Longhorn horns will look good on my VW Passat. :car:

Which hospital? My life was saved by the Hermann Hospital where I was a guest in the burns unit for seven weeks 32 years ago!

I just found your Hermann Hospital. I'll be down the road not too far away on Fannin. There are so many hospitals down there. The condo I am leasing overlooks Hermann Park, Houston Zoo, and then over to the "Medical Zone". Seriously, there are about 12 or more hospitals within walking distance of each other.

I am not a physician and I am not a "male nurse" as someone here thinks. I am a Cardiopulmonary Specialist with 20 years experience. I will be pursuing my Doctorate degree in Clinical Science/Research or Health Sciences Informatics.

I have not decided where to finish up. While in Houston, I will check out University of Houston's doctoral programs. I'll finish up with who can offer the most grant and scholarship money. I have not taken a penny of student loans. My education has all been self funded, scholarships, or grant money. And domaining has certainly helped in that regard. Self funding may take longer but I don't mind. I would rather be working (which is where the real education is). I do like Clinical Research and Clinical Trials but I have also become fond of Medical Informatics.

As of this moment, where I get my PhD is a toss up. If Houston works out, then it will be Houston.

As for finding time for domaining, that has really been decreased lately. And is going to be even less or none once I hit Houston.

She's all for it and excited to come down and visit and shop and go to the beach and hang out at the zoo and perhaps a short trip to Mexico.

More importantly, what do the dogs think about it?

Hmmm. Are you sure you are even allowed in TX? :)

Seriously, congrats dude!

That is going to be an issue...I will be dog deprived.

Fortunately, the condo I am leasing allows pets. Most likely, someone there will have a pooch.

Otherwise, I'll be going across the street to the zoo and adopting a hyena, cheetah, or lesser panda.

Seriously, that is some thing new - dogless will be different for me. There are so many shelters and rescue groups down there that perhaps I can donate some time. I already have people asking me to keep an eye out for certain breeds (especially the herding and working dogs - especially the Belgian Malinois folks). Most rescue groups across the country will coordinate transportation via ground or air. Naturally I want to see and experience everything that Houston has to offer. In time, I might be able to donate a couple of hours of my time to a shelter down there on the weekends I stay in Houston.

While I was still recovering from 82% burns and before I was well enough to fly home, I did some voluntary work at St Luke's on the information desk outside Michael DeBakey's office, although I never actually saw the great man!

Congrats on your recovery. Right now, it appears I'll be bouncing back and forth between St. Luke's and Baylor's School of Medicine. Looks like they may actually be sharing some buildings or properties.

Exhausted and big day tomorrow.

TaTa.

Thanks! I took the shuttle from my condo to St. Luke's this morning and actually passed by that hospital. That hospital district is almost the size of downtown Houston. I am going to offices on the 30th floor of some hospital. Crazy as heck! I was reading that 5,000,000 patients were treated in Houston last year. In time I will learn my way around a little better. But for now, I'll take the shuttle and save myself nearly $300 in parking fees. Houston is impressive.

Gerry, never exchanged much on the forum with you but good luck in Houston and I hope you find what you're looking for.

I had a laugh at this:
"I can make a bird feeder out of a milk carton"
When you're on your way from nursing to doctoring (PHD)

Humor should never leave just because you're over 18. ;)

Not a nurse but thanks for the well wishes.

A couple of things have come to my attention...the NBA All Star game is being played here in Houston and the doorman told me Jeremy Lin lives up above me in one of the Penthouses. Scchhhwwwwweeeeeeeeeeeeeet! There is a huge media/theater room here. Massive screen and hidef projector. I think I'll be hanging out in there watching the games tomorrow. Several Houston Rockets and Houston Texans live here. Who knows...perhaps I can score some tickets to the All Star game.

And for what it's worth, the rapper Neo also lives here. But I wouldn't even know what he looks like. Guess I better do my research.

I'm just curious Gerry, why would someone like yourself who's 60 years old want to pursue a doctorate degree? when in 2 to 5 years you'll be able to retire?

My grandma wanted to prove everyone wrong and graduated from college with a Bachelor's degree at around 70ish? Education is key in life as it can spread from one person to another and can lead to intellectual conversation after retirement too. :)

To the person who thinks I am a male nurse...

To the person who thinks I am 60...

To the person who thinks learning stops at a certain age and who thinks there is a time limit on gaining additional knowledge and teaching others...

how stupid do you feel?

The OP wanted to share his new job/career and you guys turned the thread into a personal interview and insulting idea.

Get on the topic or your post will be deleted and infraction will be given.
Show your intelligence by proving you know how to read and respond - bending the story and post your shit here would not prove you are smart.
