how do expired domain searches actually search the drops?

is there a central database accessable somewhere? how do all these different domain drop sites actually search for dropped domains. they mostly seem to turn up the same results. what are they searching on their backend?

They obtain lists of dropping domains from Verisign, plug them into various APIs such a Alexa's, DomainTools' and WordTracker's, and aggregate the metrics. It's pretty trivial software to write.

Drop catchers like Pool.com and Snapnames make these lists freely available for download. Just create an account with one of them to access the lists. If you have programming and database skills you can import the data and compare against your own keyword lists to find the "gems".
