I've been trying to get into this domain name thing for over a year now. I'm not trying to make it rich by any means, just trying to decrease my work with some extra cashflow (I work two full time jobs right now, 1st and 3rd shifts), and I'm getting a bit frustrated.

What I want to ask is can someone suggest where I can go to get a hang of getting started? I know this is what I want to do as a sidejob (or if I was lucky enough, my only job), but I just don't seem to be succeeding. I'm not asking "how do I get rich quick with this?", I'm just asking for help on where to go to learn. I know this site is a valuable resource, and when I had time a while ago, I used to lurk on here all the time reading up, but I still seem to need some help. I've since spent about 2 hours a night researching and searching for domains...

I'm more than willing to work for it, and to do my own research, but can some of you please point me in some good directions? I apparently am just not getting what makes a domain valuable, or, more importantly, how to get a valuable domain.

Anyway, I know helping me out would be a conflict of interest, but maybe some of you will take pity on someone who is getting really frustrated with this whole thing.

Heck, if someone local to Ohio would like to take me under their wing and teach me all about this, I'd gladly do whatever menial or difficult labor you need done for as long as needed ;-)

Anyway, thanks in advance for any help!

It is not difficult to get started for anyone who is willing to learn. The key to this game is to keep on reading, make good contacts, good research pays. The sites suggested above were equally resourceful to me when i was beginning.
Good luck

Well i cannot call myself a droper domainer yet as i still learn something new every single day i have learnt much from dnf. I have a plan for you maybe someone can analyse this and make improvements to it?

1) Make yourself a blog in blogspot, write everyday about how you are doing 2 jobs and are furstrated and wanna do something less tiring..remember keep it frequent and put the link in ur sig space in forums and go to toher blogs and comment there with your sites url..do this for about 2 - 3 monehts and see how google will start loving you as well as other people. Make sure you give pings to other blog search engines google it you will find out :)...this blog will get you your traffic for future use :)

2) If you have resources to buy a few names buy typos, preminum names are very hard to find these days all the good names are already taken hell even all the bad names are :D..read sales thread here and on other forums about typos..

3) Go to google news and search for ohio and look for press releases of major properties and comanies if they are spending enough money or not if its a good millions then buy off their names in dot com version , but make sure they dont have it TM'ed yet...and sell back to them

also search for expired name lists and try to reg them yourself...there are very few chances you will get it but its worth a try..read abotu deleting domains they drop at 2 pm eastern time if i am correct..keep a domain account with funds and keep trying till they are gone :) a few min everyday ..some day you will get a good name :)

hope it helps you :)

Do you have any money, honey?
To make money, you need to spend some
Research and training will help, however, spending is the key
How much have you spent buying names since you started a year ago?

A year ago you could have bought a 3 alpha letter dot com here for 2 to 3k and today you would get at least 4k, maybe even 10k

Are you prepared to spend 2k buying a name today?
If the answer is yes, make sure you ask the opinion of some mods or others with experience before you buy

I like this idea.

I'm mainly a webmaster, so naturally I'd tell you to do a site or some sort. Write about what you know, or just your opinions on things. Websites are a quick and somewhat easy way to generate revenue that you can later spend on domains, like above poster mentioned. You have to spend money to make money, but if you don't have any it's kinda tough. So definitely start out with a site, would be my advice.

I think there are different categories of domainers some do it all and some just one or 2, some reg names with traffic however small and use overture as a guide thats what I do and would suggest this for a newbie, some watch the drops for traffic names I gave up on this after a few tries, some reg good paying keywords and build sites around them, some make up good sounding names which is the most risky because you have to find the right enduser and without traffic hard to get a sale, there are those who try and sell domains as there main source of revenue and those who acquire domains to just receive monthly income, and some do both. I follow the news and get new terms as they are released like new illnesses etc, some just buy traffic names If you go this route you should pay someone to analyze traffic before making a purchase. What I am trying to say is dont spread yourself to thin at first do what your strong points are first then branch out later
good luck

Nice aggressive idea!

and those who acquire domains to just receive monthly income

That's where I fit in!

Some good advice overall here!

I would suggest trying to buying at least a couple of LLL.net or LLL.org and hold 2 years.
Based on price increases over the past 3 years, you could expect an appreciation of 30% to 100%, on the average LLL.net or .org purchased today at reseller pricing in 2 years.
That is a conservative estimate imo!

I was in your same position a few months ago. As I started to do research and collect information, I realized I had a treasure trove of very valuable information for someone in your situation. So, I decided to gather everything I learned and put it into an eBook. I am probably just a couple of weeks away from publication.

Check out my new web site for the latest status.

Well, first welcome to join this wonderful world of domaining. To get start, you do need to have some budget. Bigger the better of course.

You can do a few things. If you know some html, you can start by registering a name for yourself and start building it from the ground up. This way, you can get a feel of how to promote a domain who you own and make it worth more than the registration fee.

Then slowly acquire more names (either to buy/register/backorder) which you can flip for a quick profit. Some people will turn the domain into a turnkey application such as arcade game site and then resell it (while earning Pay-per-click income from it). Some will attempt to contact interested party and offer them to buy or lease your domain. Others probably just sit and wait for the right buyer to come and offer you to buy your domain.

There are a lot of information on the internet (or on DNForum) already which you can seach for. You do need to try everything and see what works out for you.

Good luck.
