All the recent stolen domain threads scare the sh*t out of me and I feel like I need to do something to improve the security of my computer and domains as much as possible.

What do you guys recommend?

Where do you keep all your passwords and login details, what do you use for backup and how do you ensure your domains won't get stolen?

Microsoft Excel

Made different columns for website, username, password, and and several other columns for other info.

Password protect and encrypt the excel spreadsheet.

This way when you go to open the spreadsheet you have to type in a password.

I dont trust any of the 3rd party program out there.

I dont trust 3rd programs either, Consolidate your domains to one registrar and use a long password containing both letters and numbers, add a capital or a character in there for extra measure.

Registrars really need to add extra security like what the banks are doing now

I keep it simple. I keep all my names in 3 main registrars. I always transfer out of the smaller ones. I use 3 very long and complex passwords and 3 similar usernames that I keep in my wallet and a copy in a safe at home. I obviously dont write the name of the registrars on the paper. I keep no info on my comp about passwords.

Other thing I do is keep all emails and records of names I've baught or transfered etc in my email account. I just don't delete any domain related names no matter if it's a name server change. May come in handful in proven ownership as I did have one minor issue once and needed to show them some emails.

That would suck. I try and print them out once per month and store them in my safe as a backup.

I use RoboForm (PRO) ... It's the best $30 I've ever spent IMO. It encrypts all of your passwords, notes, etc. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to store all of their pw info in a secure place.

I would NEVER use the "remember me" option, let alone save my passwords in my browser. Doing that is a disaster waiting to happen. If you value your security and use the password manager on your browser I would seriously consider changing your ways ...

Here's the CNET review of Roboform ... It has to be one of the best rated software apps of all-time I would think.

I use firefox's password manager and text file for backup. I've been thinking of moving to roboform for a while, guess now is a good time. Still I don't quite understand how is it more secure than having the passwords in firefox, looks like the same to me.

I wonder if noone else uses the comp except you, what can be the problem with a text file, can a trojan be smart enough to copy the passwords from that file?!

Trojans are smart enough to do whatever the designer wants them to do. Some of them open up holes on your computer so that people can remotely browse around your computer.

My solution is to avoid Windows. It's the only major operating system that has serious virus/spyware problems...

I use a Pocket PC phone (HTC P3600), and then Resco file explorer to encrypt/decrypt a PPC Word document. Backed up to MC and PC.

I remember about 40 to 50 passwords any time. But I don't remember what I ate last night.

very risky practice IMO, ok for not so important sites but never keep registrar passwords stored in any cache. Browser vulnerabilities are being discovered all the time, a malicious website executes a bit of code via a buffer overflow and BAM your history, literally.

Better yet, just unplug your computer from the wall. This will prevent hackers 100%.
