Example:
Let's say you have a good .com but it's taken, and all the other extensions are available: .net, .org, .us, .biz., .ws, and .info
(I don't care .name, so I did not include)

Assuming that the name is a decent name, how do you go about deciding which extension to grab if all you can buy is one?

Assuming that #1 is always the .COM: Can you rate the rest from 2 to 7? or more if you want to rate others as well.

I will summarize and post the results, if I get enough replies

If You want to develop, then You should buy the .com and develop it. No other ext, because You will lose %10-%25 off Your traffic to the .com

I was hoping to stay on the topic / survey.

I hope so too, as this should be interesting to find out.

It depends on the site in question for me (Whether it best suits an organization, or a business, etc.).

But my scale:

.com -> 1
.net -> 2
.info -> 3
.us -> 4
.org -> 5 (better though if it's for an organization or fits the extension)
.biz -> 6
.ws -> 7

I think the .net would be the second best, with .org being the third and .info being the fourth.

For type in flow on .org
For SEO .info
If it makes sense .net
For slow people or if it's witty .us
For a laugh .ws or .biz

Hope this helps these are my persnol opinions :

.com (a clear leader by far and always will be the number one)
.net (no question about it a clear number two but still way behind .com)
.co.uk (great for uk business only)
.org (Good for organistions not so good for business)
.info (great if name fits extension)
.biz (jury still out)
.ws (best junk extension)
.bz (only cuz i got one book.bz LOL)

Let us all know which one you decide on ?

Wes !

If you can't pick .com then i automatically jump for the .net if both them took then I look for different domain! As .info i only like as they were free and now super cheap! All the other tlds I don't like!

.us is not bad as it can be use as a word OR for United States USA! I have 2 domains thats not registered yet you may grab them if you like!

the .com of your name will always be the holy grail.

You may want to consider .BIZ if its intended for a B2B site. Leave .COM for B2C.

I'd just go with the intended original purpose for various tlds....we all know that due to lack of alternatives, everyone started using whatever tld for whatever purpose back in the mid-late 90's, but my prediction: we'd see a move towards increasing expectation of proper tld-usage as time passes by and internet community continues to mature. Hence my choices (after .com):

.us if its a primarily/exclusively a US-based enterprise....and IMO many belong here !!
.info if its primarily an informational/educational site
.biz if its a "business"
.org if its an "organization"
.net if its an internet-related service.

I truly don't believe in long-term viability of ccTLDs being promoted as gTLDs such as .ws and .cc due to many factors such as introduction of of additional (genuine) gtlds, stlds, and increasing importance of proper usage of ccTLDs.

I agree with DryHeat. .net has slipped since other top level domains have been added. While I sell my domains at healingsites.net and call it Healing Sites Network, I also own the .com and have it redirecting. I'm not sure I'd do it that way if I were just starting out.

I think that .info and .org have some advantages over .net at this point. .info has lost some value since so many were registered for free, but I think we'll see a comeback.
