Hello,

I was wondering what's the perception of internacional people on the portuguese language domaining market?
Does it has a future? Would you invest on it? Is it just Brazil, or do you include Portugal, Angola, etc?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Brazil has a huge population, large youthful domographic and from what I hear a growing economy, so it's not a market to ignore.

Is the language the same between Portugal and Brazil?

Also, do the terms "Aplicativos Gratis" and "Jogos Apps" sound correct to you? thanks!

Hi.
Both countries speak the same language, although there are some diferent words, but it is basicly the same. We also had a recent portuguese orthographic agreement between PT and BR, so it is even more close.

Aplicativos Gratis is right and you may also use "aplicacoes" to avoid an IDN. Jogos Apps isnt exactly the thing...but the domain contain 2 keywords, if you can work with that, its fine but not the best. Apps=aplicacoes and it should be "appsjogos"; "appsdejogos"; appsparajogos". Something like that.

Thanks for your comment!

darn, I used to own both jogosapps and appsjogos in .com, but I dropped the appsjogos because the other either had a little more traffic or more search returns in Google. now someone just regged it Jan 24, lol. that's what happens when you don't really know the language. I still think the Portuguese language market will be good for domains in coming years, we'll start seeing more sales and activity.

For whatever my opinion may be worth, I'll echo the optimistic comments about the growth of Portuguese domains.

Also, if there are any domainers who speak fluent Portuguese, I recommend that you volunteer your services to domainers on here with Portuguese domains. With a little teamwork and your combined experience contacting end users, I imagine that people on DNForum can stimulate the Portuguese domain market rather than waiting for online growth and interest in domains to come from Brazilian/Portuguese companies. Same goes for other languages.

It is unfortunate that .pt is tightly restricted, so I don't think there is a market in Portugal for .pt domains.
You can get .com.pt which is not as good, but it gets some use along .pt & .com, that are the dominant TLDs (at least that's what I saw in Lisboa).

Back in 2008 the registry suggested that restrictions on .pt would be lifted but not a peep since then.

So far I believe the real action for Portuguese domains is in .com.br but you need to be a Brazilian citizen or company I believe.
IMO Brazil and Portugal are the only significant markets for Portuguese domains.
Angola hardly uses its own TLD.

Hi there!

Thank you all for your comments.
The .pt extension is based on some legal factors, but the best (or easier) way to have one .pt is to register a trademark. It is a process that can be done in 6 months (+-).
It is strict, but not impossible. We had some rules changes, from having a simple trademark registry to a much harder TM registry, but i was already able to register some. It is a matter of time and having around 120€ for each trademark registry.
But this also means that you have a safe domain in legal terms i think. No disputes there, and keep in mind that you can allways transfer the TM and the domain to another person.
Anyway, if someone needs help, i am here for any question you might have.
The com.br is in fact a good bet, but you need to have a contact there for the registry, or you can go with a service like 101domain and pay a bunch...but i think that as time passes, a portuguese .com will be better than a com.br, like many other extensions have proven, .com turns out to be the king regardless of the language.
But yes, Brazil will be the biggest market because it has dimension.
Angola is a strange market indeed, because in one hand you have the world most expensive city there (Luanda), but on the other hand you dont really have a big internet market.
I think that if you want to get some Angola related domains, you will allways have to see it as a long term investment.
I do have some portuguese .coms but by offering them for brokerage, for end users, etc, i allways got the notion that internacional people didnt really care about portuguese domains.
I am guessing by your comments that they are only a little bit delayed...yay!

Again, thanks for the opinions and anything you need, just pm me.
