Thanks to Edwin for this Poll suggestion!

How far ahead of time do you reserve premium* domains at the various drop-catching services such as SnapNames, etc.?

(* domains that you think are valuable)

Bob, I can only answer that as a snapshot in time.
(What I am working on (looking at) right now.)

3 months ago, my average was 2 - 4 months out.

1 month ago, my average was 3 - 5 months out.

Today, my average is almost zero.

I am not buying anymore snaps nor activiting the ones I have at the present time.

Their success rate has dropped drastically. And, since they are making it difficult to check for available snaps. I am not going to do anything with them until their success rate climbs. (Snaps and SnapNames)

I have a number of them sitting on clear because the snapped missed continously over the past two months.

Mine are usually placed about 3 weeks before drop. I only have one on at the moment. Like many here I'm waiting for their system to improve before I commit any more money to them.

I think Pool.com's model is lessening the need to snap quality names weeks to months in advance.

Why spend the time to research for quality names dropping when somebody can look at Pool's HotList and backorder the domain the day before it drops?

I tend to reserve domains in two "slices". I go for the "big" names about 20-30 days before they enter REDEMPTION PERIOD since that far out about 3 out of every 4 names I try is still unsnapped, and that's a good enough ratio for me.

Then I also chase names that are 5-10 days from dropping i.e. either at the end of REDEMPTION or the start of PENDING DELETE. We're talking about smaller fish here, of course, but generally I've been happy with the "scraps" I pick up.

When a Snap reservation drops to about 2 months left, I switch from using it for "slice 1" names and focus it on "slice 2" names so that I at least get something before the Snap expires...
