I've tried looking, but haven't been able to find out how many domains (% or total) are parked...

The only stat I found was 24%, but that was back in 2006.

Also, any idea how much revenue parked domains bring per year to the industry?

I don't know. But I guess the % is going down as "Development" is the current keyword to success. Even parking companies offer ways to develop the domain with their parking service.

Found it - 22% of all .COM and .NET (August 2011) .

Any ideas of the revenue that the entire parking industry brings in per year?

Do you have a source ? This would benefit us all.

There is a way to compute the data yourself: get a copy of the .com/.net zone files (they should contain 99% of registered domains).
Then count the number of domains using known parking name servers like ns1/ns2.sedoparking.com.
This is the quick and dirty, simplistic approach.
I once did that for .mobi domains.

However, many domain names also use custom name servers/DNS settings. So they can be parked and used for E-mail at the same time for example.
The proper approach would be to resolve each domain, one by one, to IP addresses.

Was mistaken with 22%, actually 21%. See bottom-right of Page 3:

If you add that 21% plus the 12% of no sites, you have 33% (one third) of .net and .com essentially being wasted space.

I'll have to find the site I was looking at a while back, but these numbers were actually much higher (but I believe that was inclusive of all TLD's).

Any luck finding this site, Gerry?
