Obama smokes

I used to smoke for 15 years. Quit cold turkey five years ago. Haven't touched a cigarette since then. Now I can't stand the smoke.

Congrats!, My Husband was a smoker too and he quit cold turkey same as you, He said it was one of the hardest things he ever had to do. It actually took him 2 years to develop a hate for the smoke, Was it that way for you?

One pack a day, Viceroy 100s red - almost 1 euro per pack.
Philip morris red sometimes, 1.3 euro in Serbia.
Marlboro red is fine also, soft standard pack, 1.3 euro per pack.

Cigarettes are cheap here, maybe not the same quality as american but it's ok with me.

Maybe it's not the right thread but coffee is almost important for me as cigarettes - Italian Lavazza is one of the best coffee brands I tried. Love it.. Arabica richer coffee, better taste.
Anytime is time to talk coffee to me. I love coffees. I will have to try to find that Italian you mention.

Most American brands that are sold in Europe must contain and certain amount of european tobaccos. At least, that is how it has been for numerous years.

I tried the Italian labeled brands when I was in Italy eons ago. Thought I would cough a lung up with just one cigarette.

I used to smoke for 15 years. Quit cold turkey five years ago. Haven't touched a cigarette since then. Now I can't stand the smoke.
I never knew how offensive smoke on other people and clothes smelled until I had stopped smoking.

All I could think about is I truly hope I did a good enough job at hiding the smell before I saw patients.

Tony,

No matter what you listen to or read, you will always see that too much of anything or too little of anything is bad for you.

Many people never quit smoking. Some do after they hear they have spots on their lungs. Yet, some never do.

I once took care of an 88 year old woman who was sharp as a tack. Her mind and wits were with her, she chewed tobacco, drank wine daily, and usually smoked a couple of cigarettes a day.

Who in their right mind would tell her she needs to stop any of that.

Point is, everything affects people differently. I was smoking nearly 2 packs a day. It was just about controlling my life and all my activities and habits. Hell, I even bought a crushproof waterproof cigarette case to tie to my life vest when I was white water kayaking. No sir. You would not catch me anywhere without a cigarette.

so...then what's the point of this thread???......:)
The point of the thread...

despite the health risks
despite the price of a pack of cigarettes
despite the proposed increase in taxes (again)
despite the recession

how many members still smoke cigarettes?

I quit and have not paid attention to the price of cigarettes since until I saw a huge sign for a pack of Marlboro for $4.58, nearly twice the price when I quit. I was shocked.

Very simple question.

Don't try to read too much into it.

A friend's wife passed away today from cancer, having had extensive tumors that took over her body after a metastasis in the lungs. After 20+ years of smoking, she's now dead, aged just 45 years old, leaving 3 preteen kids behind. The past 11 months were exhausting, humiliating and painful not just for her, but also for her family. I hope my friend - also a smoker - quits smoking now for good.

It is heart breaking for someone so young. It is bad for anybody of any age, but I hate to see this go on for someone who, as you say, was 45 years young.

I once met a guy who was 32 years old and smoked 5 packs of cigarettes a day. Was a truck driver and all he did was sit, drive, eat, and smoke. He got the heart transplant he was waiting for. And, he ended up not quitting the habit of smoking even though he spent and extensive time in the hospital (many months) without a cigarette. This was purely a psychological thing as the nicotine has expelled itself from his system. When he went home he carried on like nothing ever happened.

Now what - a brain transplant?

I couldn't imagine smoking 1 cigarette about every 10 minutes.

He literally did nothing but smoke during his waking hours. He was an over the road cross country truck driver.

Otherwise, it would be difficult to even comprehend how someone could afford to pay for that many cigarettes and have that much time on their hands.
