I just bought a bunch of domains that I think are really good. All .doms, no hyphens, all highly searched keywords, all great branding, all good markets like travel, real estate, insurance, loans, cars. (All in my sig.)

So here is my delima. I want to pay for 2 featured listings on Sedo and/or Afternic, which costs 39.95 a month for each name. Obviously I want to pick the 2 best names that I think will be most attractive to potential buyers for these paid listings. But I can't pick 2, I think most of them have very good sales potential.

So how do I pick the top 2 to buy a featured listing for? How would you guess which ones would be most likely to sell? Would you base your decision on: the industry, # of searches on the KW, branding, number of words in the name, other???

I'm sure some of you have been in this spot. What was your thought process and how did you make a decision? I know there is no clear cut answer on this, but thought it would spark a good discussion.

Linda,

Put them in the appraisal section. It takes a while to get a feel for domains. Studying sales lists (eg dnjournal.com) and looking at the sales section here to see what sells and what doesn't helps. Having said that, names that haven't sold here for $10 have gone on to make $XXX somewhere else. Sometimes it's the luck of the draw.

Read everything on domains you can and you will get a feeling for what's good and what's not.

Thanks so much Ed. I had already been doing some of that, plus just started a new domain forum over at WebProWorld since helping others is also a great way to learn.

My biggest problem is that I think most of my names are really good, kind of like the bias I have about my kids being the greatest. I also tend to wear rose colored glasses, so I just need to come down off this domain name high and realize that this game may be somewhat like playing the lottery. Since so many people are in the game and there is some skill involved in choosing the right names and some luck involved with selling them at the right time and place.

Thanks, I will try to pick what I think are my top 5 or so and have them appraised here to get opinions form the DNforum pros.

If you honestly believe in your domains and see potential then $40 for advertising the domain' and putting it out there in the spotlight which might result in an $xxx or $x,xxx sale for the right buyer is going to be well worth it... Now of course you are cautious and unsure but sometimes you have to go with that gut feeling, especially in this business because everybody's situation is different... Pick out whichever two you feel like would do best and go ahead and experiment, good luck.

Dont do what i did! Never pay over the weekend or late on friday for your featured listing! Cos your domain is bound to be processed first on monday then along with 20 others pushes your domain straight out of the front page window and down the list!

And you want them to be as highly visible as possible, for as long as possible!

Great point. I was thinking about that.

I have decided to do 3 or 4 category listings instead of a front page featured listing, partly due to what you mentioned. Plus I have a feeling I could have better luck with someone looking for a good name in one of my specific categories like, travel, loans, real estate or cars which are all popular instead of being listed in a hogepodge of other names on the front page and then dropping off the front page after a few days.

It's very disapointing when you pay your $39 to get your domain noticed and then it stays in the window for 5 mins and then is virtually half way down the list where nobody goes!!!!!

The only other way is to get a really good name, and beg them to stick it in their top domains list that way you get free exposure til you sell it! I was lucky cos one of my domains a .co.uk one was the same as a .com i spotted in the top listing. So i begged and pleaded with them and they whacked her in for me! I suppose it was only fair really.

FYI, I did some Sedo category listings for $9 each and have gotten a lot of targeted views.
