I read this yesterday. It was only a matter of time before Palm just folded.

I just wonder if HP can save them or if Palm would be a money drain for HP.

The mobile device is where the sales are at but one has to go head-to-head with iPhone and other makers, like HTC.

Palm is in a very similar spot that Intel was in about 20 years ago.

Intel didn't need to make flashy products with commercials that mesmerized everyone - they came out with good products that ran well.

Then, AMD came around and started bragging about numbers, speed, etc.. while not even mentioning stability and overall quality. But that didn't matter - they bought flashy ads on computer magazines (and other magazines) and then swallowed up a huge part of the market. Intel had to sacrafice quality to compete.

The same is going on with Palm vs. the iPhone (Apple) and HTC. Palm had the second best obile products in terms of reliability (second only to Blackberry - and I'm talking about Palm devices w/ the Palm OS)) and there were tons of applications for them. Now, Apple and HTC (and their respective carriers) are having "oh pretty" like commercials and peope are being drawn to purchase these flashy devices despite the fact that their commercials brag about features that, for the most part, have been around for many years (not uncommon in the cell phone industry).

Sadly, I don't think HP is very good at marketing so it may be a money pit for them (and will be for a while). Palm's OS is hurting and needs to play some serious catch up to the iPhone's OS and the Andriod OS.

At the opening bell, Palm was up 24%. Not sure about HP.

That would have been a quick buck to have been made in less than 24 hours betting on Palm.

I also heard that Palm stock was nearly worthless and was on the verge of being de-listed.

For eons, they had been combating Microsoft's OS. But, you're right...new players in the game. Palm OS was/is getting stomped.

Still, read something the other day that MS may be joining the Android market? What??? MS going open source?

This is sometimes expected when one company buys out another based on stock prices (and especially when it is stock for stock based). It's like gravity - they'll move closer to each other.

MS's mobile OS has gone though so many different re-designs (and names) it's not funny. It had it's moments in the sun where it was very stable (I still have my Samsung i830 because the OS on that was extremely stable) but more often it wasn't stable (like what came with the Treo 700W).
