This storm is a nasty mofo. We're getting rain all day today in central Florida from the outer bands.

Windy & rainy on the east coast too. Dunno if it's related to either storm though.

it looks ominously like hurricane camille at wiki; trajectory and power. while no doubt bringing back memories of 2005

I'm still wondering how they predict this track this early. I am at the center of the cone, three hours inland, yet we're told we can still expect 100 mph winds if it doesn't turn any more eastward. That sucks. The governor already cancelled school in 30 parishes (counties) for Tues and Wed. I think they just wanted out buses again for the evacuations down south.

And it looks like they may actually USE THEM this time!

Ouch! They use current conditions and where they're going to "predict" (a.k.a. guess) where the storm is going to go but can be not too reliable - just look at how much Hanna's track has changed in the past 36 hours (and how drastically it's changed).

Either way, Gustav is a nasty storm, anyone in that area should take every precaution to protect their homes and then get out to someplace safe from the storm.

Bell, if you're in the path, I'm assuming the last we'll hear from you is tomorrow afternoon and won't hear again from you for a week or so (unless you have a generator to power your computer and some backup connection to the internet). Stay safe and hopefully he doesn't intensify too much. The good news is that they do not expect him to reach cat 5 strength and will only be a cat 3 at landfall (better than the cat 4/5 they were predicting yesterday).

Yeah, take a look at this beast - currently crossing Cuba. Florida is the white outline top right.

I didn't realize he was that big nor would he affect us here, but thanx for pointing it out. We had some good thunderstorms go though last night.

I was just reading an article on CNN about people who won't leave New Orleans. With the projected path, they're looking at a very strong storm where the winds will push water into the bay and canals putting extra pressure on the dikes.

I wonder how many of the people who were interviewed will be dead on Tuesday? It sounds crude but it is the truth.

Parked.com/Modern Domainer is having the "Domainer Mardi Gras" in Feb of 2009 in New Orleans. A ways out, but I'm sure they are nervous as well. http://www.domainermardigras.com/

Katrina's wrath still lingers today and that is 3 years later. Another similar storm or even a bigger one could very well be on it's way...

I wish all the best to those in that area!

While many of us expected the path to change, the models have been amazingly accurate so far as we approach halfway. Sure, it could turn a little, but the upper-level high seems to keep it on a straight path.

Traffic is bumper-to-bumper everywhere (we're 180 miles north of New Orleans) and no fuel to be had as the stations are all sold out. I suspect there will be many vehicles stranded on the side of the road somewhere like during Katrina.

I have to go prep the generator and pre-cable the fridge, fan, a couple lights, TV and PC. Hopefully BellSouth's generators work on the phone lines.

But what really sucks ... since they closed the schools I have to babysit indefinately!

If you're 180 miles straight north of NO, then you might only have a weaker hurricane, a Cat2 or Cat1 but either way you'll have a lot of cleaning up to do.

10AM Update:
MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 120 MPH...195 KM/HR...WITH HIGHER
GUSTS. GUSTAV IS A CATEGORY THREE HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON
SCALE. SOME RE-INTENSIFICATION IS FORECAST DURING THE NEXT 12 TO 24
HOURS...AND GUSTAV COULD REGAIN CATEGORY FOUR STRENGTH LATER TODAY
OR TONIGHT. FLUCTUATIONS IN STRENGTH ARE LIKELY THEREAFTER...BUT
GUSTAV IS FORECAST TO REMAIN A MAJOR HURRICANE UNTIL LANDFALL.

GUSTAV IS A LARGE TROPICAL CYCLONE. HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND
OUTWARD UP TO 50 MILES...85 KM...FROM THE CENTER...AND TROPICAL
STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 200 MILES...325 KM. NOAA
BUOY 42003 RECENTLY REPORTED 8-MINUTE AVERAGE WINDS OF 54 MPH... 86
KM/HR...WITH A GUST TO 67 MPH...108 KM/HR.

THE MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE JUST REPORTED BY A NOAA HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT IS 962 MB...28.41 INCHES.

In a nutshell, he is a 100-400 mile wide mid range F2 tornado.

If anyone in the path needs a backup mx or http server, I'll set it up on one of my servers for you if possible. No charge. PM me.

Ed, for you I would be more concerned about Hanna. Any updates on that storm?

Well, it is not fun. Gustav is overhead as I write. Damage everywhere. 800,000 customers without power. Currently we're looking at 75 mph winds outside the window.

But I fired up the generator for the fridge, DirecTV and internet. Hopefully we won't be two weeks before we get electricity back.

Hunker down! Donny of Parked.com survived Katrina, this one seems to be much milder.

Glad to see you're OK, Bell.

And we don't just need to watch Hanna, we need to watch Ike and (the storm soon to be named) Josephine.

We FINALLY got power back tonight. Six days without power sucked but there are many here in Louisiana still without power or water.

The worst part was not being able to wash clothes (they were getting ripe!).

While it will likely change, I sure hate seeing Ike bearing down on us on the current path.
