I have tested several hyphen domains and I can tell you they work for me and rank just as well
I just picked up a couple for 500.00 each and have already been offered over 1500.00 for each because they are very high in exact search and phrase search
There was also a few articles recently that stated the search engines do not care about the " - " but the words and they were ranking very well
I think you need to stick with high search terms tho. Just my opinion

good to read this/
renewing those geo hyphen domains were always for sure a good investment thought :)

in few of other threads about hyphens, there were lots of discussions,
but as rightly said above, its domainers who discriminate against hyphens

i have a gut feelinh .. in coming year/s, hyphen even in browsers, urls, seo, se will be treated well above what we think...
i dont know , but i have tht feelin .... technology will chnage the way we (domainers) see and treat the hyphens .

They are cheaper than the non-hyphen versions and can be just as useful. They help break up words and can make a URL easier to read.
I don't think the general public has a problem with a hyphen in a domain, if you read the domain and see a hyphen you just enter it in your browser.

Hyphen domains, especially .com's, are a decent alternative if the non-hyphen version is already being used or is too expensive to acquire.

End users don't seem to particularly care about hyphens. I agree with ecomindia, domainers discriminate against hyphens, end users don't. I've sold a couple of word-word-word.com names to end users this month for mid $xxx each.

Hyphenated domains are valuable if the keywords are good. I've had some good offers for some of mine, and have sold one this month (at Sedo).
European end users (especially) aren't against hyphens like most domainers are.
