Ok i'll try to open this up with a question aimed specifically at my present need for info but feel free to turn this into a general discussion on the subject...

My question is this, does having a hyphen in between the words of a domain name increase its ranking in the search engines significantly...?

I have found a name that is a long one (4 words hyphenated = 24-characters) but pulls in 24025 searches on overture...

are there any easy ways of using this as a re-direct to another site on the same subject while retaining a high ranking in the search engines...

Yes it helps. Frame the site you want to direct to (keeping the hypenated domain) . Enoms redirection includes meta tags so you can reinforce your positioning for that specific term.
