As is usually recommended in this business, reading books doesn't help that much. Go look at other peoples blogs, start your own - wordpress is an excellent open source script for that.

agree.. first identify your audience, and what you want to achieve with your blog..

I say try out webloggers.org ... the mods are quite helpful and offer nice tips for newbie bloggers.

Check out http://www.problogger.net/ and under the "Popular at Problogger" tabber, look at all the articles for Beginners. It's a great place to start.
