A question: what do you do when a DNF member's profile here itself is hacked into?

What if an old timer's profile is hacked, and you send a wire/paypal to him, counting on the old trust factor? You can't use escrow all the time.

I just reported married.com stolen last week. Search dnf, same iranian guy too.

Nothing you can do except ask all the questions you can before moving forward.

Who is the guy?

and here is the shocker: both domains were at netsol

whats up with netsol and hacked/stolen domains?

It seems a very large percentage of the stolen domains are at netsol, but a couple of factors involved may be that that's where all the old/valuable domains still are, in particular for registrants that doesn't keep up with things... (original owners, not domainers). It's always been there, since that's the only place they cold be regged back then... and they don't realize or care that they can move them. ..and the old domains tend to more often have old email addresses as contacts, addresses that may not be current, and may get hacked.
So netsol is the #1 registrar for stolen domains. Or rather, for stealing domains.

Actually there seems to be one or a group of people doing a lot of dirty business lately. Just so everyone is aware of what happened over at DP. The scammer created a look alike site and when you clicked on the link you logged into the wrong site. It's like the plague over there. There's posts everywhere where people have either had their accounts stolen, names bought via PP and reversed, etc etc.

It seems that they are loving godaddy names. Adams new employer isn't doing much to help these people who got robbed. Paypal as usual isn't doing anything either. One guy said he had over 2000 verified transactions on Paypal and when he told them the scammer reversed on a domain they suspended his account.

Watch out for hijacked forum accounts. A member can have all the positive feedback, but if thats not them actually signed in its useless.

Look at the stuff we are worried about and in fear of here:

Hacked email addresses
Hacked domains
Hacked registrar accounts
Hacked DNForum accounts
Hacked Domain spoof sites

This is ridiculous, how are such a small % of people controlling all of these actions, and winning? I'm glad I do 99.9% of my domaining on this site, because its the only community I trust.

That being said, there has got to be something we can do to stop this trend other then domain in constant paranoia. Yes, we have less concerns about theft overall then a Brick and Mortar shop, but Brick and Mortar shops also don't have 100k items sitting in the display window, like some of us do in our accounts.

One of these guys / girls needs to be caught and an example made of them. If something like this happened and was made public, it would start to act as a deterrent.

Make sure you've got updated firewall/antivirus/anti-malware software. Deal with verified members, use Escrow, do background checks on domains/owners etc. and you should be fine. We must not let this small group of losers keep us from doing business.

Here are few of my own recommendations:

The best bet is to use Domaintools history search to check ownership dating back as far as possible.

Make sure there are no strange email changes that could be a sign of a hijacking.

Always be suspicious when someone emails you a name out of the blue.

Never simply trust someone else's research - do your own due diligence, even if it is a trusted forum member. People sometimes let their guard down, and that is when problems can happen.

Get everything in writing and know with whom you are doing business.

Search for mentions of the domain name in Google and domain boards to see if there were issues in the past.

Speak to the owner over the phone.

If something seems strange or the price sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

I just created DNBlacklist.com as a resource which can be used to list stolen domains, and for buyers to use as one resource to investigate domains offered for sale. It's still a very rough system - created in a few hours - but it's a beginning.
Now all it needs in for people (the owners preferably, but anyone can do it), to list their stolen domains.
Anyone can search the database, but to enter names in the DB users must be registered.

If you are thinking about buying adult domains on adult forums and you have icq, there are alot of spammers acting like sellers selling names that they dont own.

How are domain names stolen? I mean, let's say I have registered domain names through GoDaddy.com .... how does someone steal them from me?
I'd like to know so I can protect them better.

Thanks

Usually names are stolen by hijacking the E-mail address used in whois.
Also if your computer is infected with a keylogger/spyware sensitive information could leak including bank account info, passwords etc.
Another mistake is using free E-mail addresses like hotmail, gmail or yahoo, that are vulnerable, or even expire, so the handle can be claimed by another person
