mobile internet use is forecast to surpass pc internet use.
I can't say it any clearer than that - people will be using the internet more and more on their mobiles. You can ignore it but it will happen anyway. People will be searching, shopping, surfing, buying and selling, listening to internet radio, making reservations, etc. on their mobiles, and it's started already.
.mobi is being set up as the extension of choice for mobile websites just as all this is happening. When the marketing wave hits and .mobi sites start being advertised and get into people's mindset, the extension will have made it.
If length is an issue, is it better to type in
domainname . com /mobile
or
domainname .mobi
I think the length of domain will become less and less of an issue with mobile, people will type in a domain or term if it is exactly what they are looking for, period. Sounds like this italian term is 17 characters but highly popular, so all of a sudden people won't use their mobiles to search or type in this highly popular term? I don't think so.
I think all the recent .mobi sales, and all the news out about mobile internet progress (if you haven't been asleep the past month), make .mobi a good calculated risk for popular terms.
People who haven't made at least a little investment in a few popular terms when they had the chance may be kicking themselves in time, IMO
