Hi.

Being a newbie, I wanted to know what goes down when you sell a domain? How do you transfer the domain to another person? Does this cost money? Thanks.

All depends on who the domain is registered with. Some companies still charge an ownership change fee, and some still require notorized documents to do an ownership change. Best advice is to avoid registering names with these companies. This should be in their terms and conditions.

If your names are registered with Enom you can change ownership simply by "PUSHING" the domain to the buyers Enom account. Many registrars have adopted a similar method of changing ownership so to answer your question, change of ownership is very easy and takes seconds if you choose one of these domain registrars.

Free ownership transfers and EASY ownership transfers are importrant to domain name resellers. . .

Sure DotRegistrar is free, but it is a pain to navigate through their site. . .

In addition to What ZooBar said, OPenSRS allows you to assign the new owner a login and passwork to administer the domain name.

Once you get payment, you give the buyer the necessary info to control the name.

Good luck.

Bob is right about DotRegistrar - they seem like a solid company - but their site is horrendously complicated.

If the sales price is large it's usually better to use an escrow company to protect yourself - escrow acts like a middleman - they hold the domain until the money comes through to them or vice-versa - when everyone is happy the money can be sent through to the seller and the name to the buyer.

Hope this helps.
