Let me set the stage. 4 months ago I was surfing e-bay and saw this ad for 1,000,000 unique visitors to my web site auction. Well it had 5 minutes left and was only up to $207 with 6 unique bidders, so I said what they heck. Long story short, it was a super big scam. This guy stroked me along until it was to late to get my money back from PayPal, and then he totally stopped answering my e-mails.

Well e-bay has a buyer protection plan and while there are many hoops, it works. I must have sent about 15 e-mails and physical snail mail letters to e-bay, and they just sent me confirmation that they will pick up the tab for this. I know that most people would have given up on this, that's why scumbag crooks win, and they know it. But this guy lost his account and is banned and may face criminal charges, what a way to start off the new year. Any way just wanted to spread the word, bye bye for now.

I hope that this is the start of a new broom at Ebay.

It used to be a great service and one that the net needs desperately. I gave up on it a few months ago because of all the changes and problems, and the perception that it was an easy vehicle for fraud.

I have the same situation playing out. The guy wasn't transferring the name, so I filed a Paypal dispute so that hopefully Paypal would freeze his account and preserve my payment. The guy submits for a refund to me and for 2 + weeks Paypal says they attemped to recover my money. They got nothing. Now Paypal is saying tough luck.

In the future, any name I buy with Paypal, it will be understood that immediately after payment I get the login info for the name. If I don't get it, I'm on the phone to Paypal immediately and telling them to reverse the payment. Paypal drags their feet when you file a complaint online, giving the seller plenty of time to drain their account.

God idea Gregr but it takes 1 minute to divert paypal funds to another source. By the time you dial the phone the $$$ is gone. Always use a CC with paypal. This way, you can dispute the charge. You will win a paypal dispute 99% of the time.

DO NOT USE A MASTERCARD!

Only use a Visa online...here is why:

I bought 2 cisco switches on ebay...I paid with paypal...I used a visa to buy one and an mastercard to buy the other...the guy never shipped.

I filed the complaint with paypal, but they were useless...so I disputed the purchases...Visa supports 3rd party charges (you pay someone and they pay someone else), MasterCard DOES NOT support 3rd party charges so you can't dispute the charge...

Did Paypal freeze your account?

No, but it took almost a year to get the Visa charge removed...from what I understand PayPal was not charged back, I think Visa ate the loss...which is why MasterCard won't support third party charges, there is no way for them to recover the money (from what I understand)

PayPal definetely SUCKS.
Do not use it for any serious transactions. It is just unbelievable for such big company to be at the edge of scam if not already crossed the line. I guess that's true for all businesses; if the market is good, no problem with services at all, when it goes down, they'll try EVERYTHING to recover their position.
Look at the former Afternic for example.

CC or escrow is a must for anything above you-can-afford-to-lose.

I bought a $6K+ TV using Paypal. The TV was never shipped.
Paypal recovered $200 and said tough luck on the rest. I did a chargeback with Discover. Paypal froze my account. Still frozen a year later.

If you have time you can e-mail this guy, with you PP case:
bill krauz <[email protected]>

He has been collecting cases for a class action against PayPal.
I think member DTobias is also involved in anti-PP campaign.

gregr, I can see why you hate PayPal, I would have gotten on a plane for that much. I'm glad you were able to do a charge back.
