So I attended my first DNforum Auction last night (3/9/03) and even my girlfriend decided to sit and watch.

What a Hoot! I loved it! Bravo to Greg R. for creating such a fun event. My girlfriend (the innocent type) is not used to seeing the crass words in the domains you guys like to buy and she couldn't stop saying, "I can't believe someone registered gay****.com."

The funniest part is that while we were joking about another domain, sexmed.net, she accidentally knocked the keyboard while the mouse must have been hovering over the bid button. I swear to God that her move must have hit the enter key as she accidentally bid on Sexmed.net and won! She actually thinks it’s hilarious that she owns it.

Anyways, if you have not gone, you must go just to laugh at some of the domains and how much people are willing to pay for them.

One piece of advice I learned (GregR, maybe add this to the Rules section so people will know): Sometimes if you bid at the exact same time as someone else, you it will post that you have the same bid. .com.net.org and myself must have bid $20 at the same time on justdeleted.com as my $20 bid appeared above his $20 bid. Turns out when the time expired, He won so I learned that if there is a tie bid, the person who bid second will win the domain. I don't even care that I lost that domain as I was there for fun, and fun it was.

What do others think of the Auctions?

Update: GregR contacted me to let me know that a tie bid can be contested & that the domain can go back up for auction (I'm impressed with his fairness). I declined his offer as I was bidding on this domain for entertainment purposes only.

What I think would make the auction even better is if we were able to text message (so that messages could be seen by all at the auction) while the auction is going on.

This would create even more friendly competition (& thus more fun) as I can picture two members who are fighting over a domain can then taunt each other as the bidding goes up, daring the other to top their bid. I bet this would create more profit for those selling domains and more incentive for others to come enjoy a "sporting event" type of atmosphere.

During the auction, I was often wondering if others are thinking the same thing when I see that a junk name has been given a $4000 starting price that is laughable. With text, we could have the "peanut gallery" saying what's on everyone's minds.

What do you think?

Wow, call me a newbie! How do you chat while in the auction? I didn't see it.

We know you are just saying that, so we won't think you have sexual problems.

The auction was designed for serious bidders. Please don't encourage people to attend just to laugh at names.

I recenly sold a domain that I was going to let expire because I thought it sucked and valueless. I sold it for more than 1K a few days before it was due to expire...You never know what a domain is worth to someone...something that has no value to you or I could be priceless to another person.

It should be set so only Sheva can enter the auction then. :)

Another thing that has happned to me SEVERAL times is this:

Ihaev debatedover renewing a name. Reluctantly, I did. Within a week, somebody contected me to buy the name. It is obvious that people who are interested in a domain will watch to see if it will be deleted if it is near the expiration date. I think I have made maybe 8-10 sales that way
