Hello Everyone.......

This is the first I've been able to get online, in close to a week here is the story. My computer system crashed, because the rambus burned up. The one power supply fan went out, at any rate I had a 2 GHz pent celery. So like it or not, it was time to upgrade.

I checked out new built systems, walmarts al cheapo was $400 and a poor system. Staples had systems on sale, but they was compaq and was not a good deal. Keep in mind I had no way to get online, to order parts to build a system even.

So instead I order the parts, at a computer store and had to wait for a pent 2 duo core E4300 CPU. I had my brothers crashed system, and tried his 3.4 pent but it was bad. I wanted to get online pretty bad, and even got my gateway laptop up and running. But then found, I lost my network card and couldn't get on the DSL hookup.

So today the guys calls, the cpu was in and I went and got it. So I finshed building the new system....

New 500 watt power supply, new 250 GB SATA2 hard drive. A new asus P5L-VM 1394 mother board, new 2 GB of pny PC5300 Ram. I used the rest of my old stuff, the 250 GB sata1 drive and 15 GB IBM drive, one for my main drive and ones as backup.

So I put my old drive with all my stuff on it, and xp would just shut down, my system instead in booting into it. I got a sick feeling, after waiting close to a week to get online. But all my stuff I had, could only be pulled off the old drive. Microsoft will not let you change, your hardware and use the old drive at all.

No way of using your old drive, just shut down your system every time you try. No way around it, that meant doing all the drivers for the DSL. And I'm behind a hardware firewall, all software has to be reinstalled. All all of xp pro's updates download and installed over again. Changing over all the needed firefox files, with passwords and history and all that again.

That meant I had to mount the old drive, and copy one by one the files for firefox. Thank god I got the stuff to work, on a new install of firefox. We have come to the point, where microsoft feel they own your computer now. All this will take me hours and hours, to redo because microsoft gives no way to transfer, the old system over to new hardware.

Ok my rant is over, I'm happy with the new system it's pretty fast. No waiting on anything, the antivirus don't slow the system down anymore. That 2 GB of ram is sweet, and I'm so so very happy I'm back online once again. Being forced to go, cold turkey was pretty depressing for sure.

I would like to know more about your old computer Tas, who is the manufacturer? and what operating system was installed?

I have a full version of xp installed in my system that I bought, and I've been able to pull the drive and install it in another system no problem, most computer manufacturers preconfigure Windows to the computer, this maybe why your having problems.

I have xp pro and the old system, I built my self from parts I got online. But yes I had also done it like you have, but one of them updates must of changed that.

I checked with the computer shop, they confirmed xp pro will indeed shut the system down. All I can think of, is that they loaded the stuff on one of the many updates they done.

Tas38,

Why do you hate MS? You had problems with all this hardware, but at the end you blame ms :)?
Disk mirroring always used as one of the ways by people to steal from software manufacturers. Lets say you have a computer, you install there
all your programs, after that you copy this hardrive and go to the market and try to sell it to other people. Sounds funny, but this is actually what many people did 5-7 years ago before ms "married" the soft to be more integrated to the hardware. Many computer stores even in North America used mirroring techniques to install the same software on many computers they sell without licensing. Right now it is harder to do since the activation process introduced by a company in addition to hardware check.

Without ms won't be whole computer industry. The company doesn't provide
in most cases any tech suport. This is done on purpose in order give jobs to millions of people worldwide that can go to any computer related school, study and get a job as computer technicians and network admins etc.

Give more creadit to ms, the company is facing a very difficult task of building a quality OS taking into consideration thousands of manufacturers.
It is too easy for apple. They make their own computer in the lab, and they can test their system and parts, and how they are working together. if something doesn't work they go and change the part, so everything works smooth. MS on the other hand is dealing with thousands of configurations, and the task is just unbelievably hard to bring it back to work together. The company created the program, and each hardware manufacturer now can go and test their hardware for compatibility. You can read about this program here:
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/winlogo/default.mspx
Most of the companies though don't do the testing. MS has to charge for these tests, d some smaller manufacturers choose to skip the test.

re: your current situation

There are actually ways to transfer files over from old hardware to new hardware. The migration process is actually very simple and you have to use the Backup utility, found on the Start->All Programs ->Accessories ->System Tools menu. You should open this on the old PC and the wizard will ask you what you want to backup. Please indicate that you want to backup, in your case choose backup everything and choose a network drive of the new computer, and then follow the prompts to begin the backup process. After that start backup utility on the new computer and restore everything. Once you reboot the computer the only thing will be left is to activate windows, and office if you have it.

If you have any questions about ms software at some point please let me know. Ms has hundreds of tools to recover, restore, implement and to fix. All the problems that you are facing some network admin already faced many times before, and solutions exist.

The real problem is that MS, is over reaching into the owners rights doing this. It's like should they put a CPU ID on all systems, that tells them who everyone online is. Intel tried that and it failed, because that takes away people rights. Like if they can do that, then the law should be able to put tracking chips under everyone's skin. They could say, well why are you worried if you don't do anything wrong.

Next them chips could have away, to record everything some one does. They could say, they have the right to do it to protect everyone. In truth they do need to protect people, but not at the cost of everyones rights. MS has the right to protect their OS, but not at the cost of the owners rights to use it. And to me, that is stepping on everyones rights that pays for the xp pro CD.

The court has ruled, that MS was over reaching on much lesser things. Now if MS had giving me a fairly easy way, to use the old drive on my new system then it would not have been a problem. But they put code on the boot sector of the drive, that checks the bios and when it see it's a new mother board. It just shut down the system, infact if I redo the boot sector it will most likely boot into xp fine.

I paid to use xp pro on any one system at a time, and I should be able to easy use it on a new system if I want. Before you could call a number, and get a new key to let you use it on a new system. But this time it did not give me that option at all, that is because some one give out the source code. So hackers could make their own keys, that is MS's problem and they have no right, to take away other peoples rights because of it.

All of this could have easily been avoided with one word: Apple
