The 'world's cheapest laptop', developed in India, was unveiled by Union Minister for Human Resources Development Arjun Singh at the Tirupati temple on Tuesday evening.

The laptop, jointly developed by several organisations, such as the University Grants Commission, the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras, and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, will be priced at around $10 to $20 (about Rs 500 to Rs 1,000), officials said.

I read (I think on BBC) that the $10 was mistranslation and it's actually $100. Still, it's excellent to see these initiatives. Venezuela is doing something similar.

Some say it will come with 1 or 2 Gig RAM.
What's the cheapest price for 1 Gig RAM stick?
$10? $15?

If so, how can one make $10 laptop?
I would say $50 laptop and still be a winner.

I do not know will this be a $10 or $100, what I know is the indian chaneel news showing 500 Rs laptops (i.e. 1$=49Rs) = $10 , which is really validating the value !

Agree, every single thing of PC will touch $10 atleast .. be it mem stick, usb port :))

Even Lapdance is expensive ;_)

Price would have to be subsidized.
Same as what the US congress and the fed are doing for alot of companies right now.

Actually, these are very doable.
The original Asus EEE laptops (700 series) would now fall into this category, in terms of manufacturing cost.

There'd be no need for subsidies. The companies simply declare the lost profit as a tax write off due to charitable expenditure, and sells them at the $100 price tag.

How many years has there been talk of a $100 laptop?

And even more than ever, not too many companies can afford a huge write off.

I saw one article regarding this.
It's said that $49 Laptop was submitted.

So, I guess $50 Laptop is possible.
