I take prasits and kidkools point: In the case of informational sites, especially health-/medical- related (where surely a lot of money is involved...) .info should be an advantage.
I also saw some international companies going for .info, but maybe this is seen different within the United States, where .com/.net/.org surely dominates the mind, while in Europe it is a good possibility to overcome all these different country TLDs.
I believe .info is by far the best of the new extensions, and it gave some newer content and theme based sites a possibility to get a dictionary name. They will put a higher value on these names in exchange.
In addition, "info" has a sensful meaning or is at least immediately understood in most languages. The main point on a domain is, how easy can people remember it? Is the domain name coming in mind or close if we search for something?
Not to forget, mainy type-ins a lot of domains receive in these days are not result of people thinking: Lets try the .com - they mostly write a search term into the navigation bar of their browser. I saw this mainy times, as for a lot of non-webmastering people (the mass, and our customers) the different between a search engine and this similar looking "field" doesn't seem to be clear. The common browsers check then if there is a website available, at the moment first .com, then .net and .org. This is something technical which can change very fast, and as relevancy is a must for todays search services, I think it will.
For these reasons, I believe .info will have a good value in long terms, and in some cases it might be able to compete with .com soon, while .net seems to be falling in the past years (back in the late Nineties a lot of famous sites had a .net, and later on many of them startet to change the main URL's into a .com). On auctions the first .infos get an interest, yes, the prices are often not very exciting, but this is not unusual, as there is often a good alternative still available, and no quick type-in traffic to expect.
But nobody offered $$$$$$ on a .com in the early days. So domain speculators will have to wait until the market gets tight, webmasters can relax knowing they picked a descriptive domain one can base some serious development on. Because this is an important point too: How is the name looking in adverts?
