Hello DNF.

I have just read the latest article from Mara of Sedo on the increasing popularity of .infos.
The article can be found here:

Sedo Article

What is DNF's opinion about the popularity of .infos? Will they be the next .com or is it just a marketing push from the registrars?

Lets here some opinions!

Regards,
Fabian

Nothing will be the next .com, but .info is for sure increasing in popularity. It is a good extension for anything related to information, like travel, people, cities, education, shopping etc. Also seems to be popular in Germany. Sale prices are higher in the last year as well. I think it has good acceptance because most people are on the internet looking for information on something, and the extension has been promoted well through discounts and even free regs.

Sedo seems to see a lot of potential in .info. In a similar article published in this month's newsletter they predict that in the near future.info will occupy the second place after dot com--displacing .net. Quite interesting indeed....but i see the opposite because spam search is depending on the .info domains because they are cheap and available for everyone and this is another threat to .info IMHO.

It's possible that all of the .info's that were registered cheap for development purposes will result in more awareness of .info. It's just as likely that 90% of those .info's that Sedo now has listed for sale won't get renewed next year.

I have never recognized an advertisement that contained a .info site. I have seen advertisements with .com, .net and .org. But to my knowledge I have never seen a company mention their website as .info. I guess popularity is in how you measure it. Clearly cheeseburgers are more popular than Prime Rib since we consume more of them. It the price were the same though, I would imagine the demand for cheeseburgers would drop.

It depends which country you live in, in the UK it's not that uncommon.

I've seen at least three TV ads that feature .info domains.

FYI, They were/are…
http://uglysmoking.info - NHS stop smoking campaign
http://brighthouse.info - some credit/shopping company
http://spain.info - Tourism site for Spain (also advertised in national press regularly).

Hi,
The way i look at it is if i could have domains in any type it would be .com & .info
As is often mentioned on here, .info means the same in 37 countries, i could end there!
As i understand it, countries were given their country.info by icann as a last minute gesture. Although more people type in the .com at mo, that will change. Other things will change too. For example, paris has other connotations, forget them. Think of the place. Really only a few domains should matter .com, .info, .eu & .fr (strangely, i would put them in that order!)
The other thing worth remembering is we are domainers, but some of us develop too. This is key. If the owners of .com & .net are happy to park, which they often are, it leaves the field wide open to develop the .info. Shoot straight up the search engine with your generic. (& good site!)
Also , as we know, many businesses, large & small have a woeful knowledge of the internet. There are many businessmaen who haven't heard of a domain. They just leave it to the i.t. section or developer, who also aren't as talented in this area as they should be.
If a major .com has been tied up since '96 say. And the owner either will not sell or wants a telephone number price? Where you gonna go? I say the .info
I'm not plugging them as i only have a few. I actually have hundreds & hundreds of .co.uk's. I love the .co.uk as am British & with the forthcoming announcement of nominet transfer fee reducing from £30 to £10, the low to middle sales will BOOM!
Having said that, wish i had stacks of good .infos.
Cheers, Guy

I am happy to say if you type in "miniplayer" into google search...

miniplayer.info is the #1 result.

The extension doesn't matter unless you are relying on type-in traffic. There is a miniplayer.com which is parked at godaddy and it doesn't even come up in the results.

And THAT is a very important point. One that I think people underestimate when looking at the future of this industry. The natural evolution of internet use is to move from browser bar to search engine unless you know exactly what site you are looking for.

I am not believing .info will ever be anywhere near .com...but (as I saw it on DNforum and believe it to be true) I believe if the name works as "name"info.com...it will work well and have value as a .info.

Good - birthcontrol.info

.info works regardless of any corresponding .com derivative ... and name.info would be much preferable to nameinfo.com.

... the popularity of .infos? Will they be the next .com or is it just a marketing push from the registrars?
Both coexist just fine. To the main point: .info is powerful and growing. Sales, use, and prices continue to increase as the world moves every form of media to the internet. The more players that enter the field ... yield ever increasing demand.

IE7 will blurr the address bar and search [bar] for a lot of people for the first time. This has to have an effect on type-ins, because for the first time millions more people are going to have a search box on the same line. They are quickly going to realise that if the use the box on the right they are likely to find what they are looking for much more quickly.

The extension doesn't matter unless you are relying on type-in traffic.
Type-ins occur primarily within an extension. As an extension grows grows so do the type-ins for similar named sites.
