iPhone.com has just been sold to Apple, who desperately wanted it to promote the new iPhone brand/model. This is being reported in several articles, but the one where they confirm the sale with the previous owner is linked to below. The article reports a seven figure (million $ plus) sale price paid by Apple! The domain now redirects to Apple's servers and uses Apple's DNS.

Update: Mac/Apple news sites are starting to pick up on this iPhone.com domain sale:

That was a big no brainer...he would have made more money though from the traffic I think! (which they could do nothing about as it existed waaaay before their phone) problem was, all the visitors were seeing competition cellphone ads! That is one lucky domain owner!

Since Apple acquired iPhone.com for seven figures....

what is the appraised value of wwwiPhone.com? (Evidently, Estibot puts wwwiPhone.com at $60,000)

I betcha the wwwiPhone.com parked page generates alot of good traffic.

Thanks for your feedback.

If he gave it up for anything less than $5m without serious negotiation, he's a nut. Should have made $2.5m at least or sat on it.

The name has likely cost apple well over 37 million for the right to use Cisco's trademark, more like $100 million:
Quote:
Both companies acknowledge the trademark ownership rights that have been granted, and each side will dismiss any pending actions regarding the trademark. In addition, Cisco and Apple will explore opportunities for interoperability in the areas of security, and consumer and enterprise communications. Other terms of the agreement are confidential.

Yes, it might have "cost" Apple a similar sum. But I'll eat my trousers if there's no stock deal involved. For Apple to issue more stock to value the deal at $50 million, no stockholders will be bothered by a very insignificant dilution whereby Apple gets that domain.

I'm sure that Jobs gets a lot of the loot but not all of it.

Besides he deserves the hefty sum he gets. Let's not forget he did kind of bring the company back from the brink, and was the founder.
