iPhone to fuel contractor shortage
Pay rates booming for telecoms techies...

EXCERPTS FROM THE ARTICLE:

Demand for content and applications for the Apple iPhone will push up the cost of hiring IT contractors skilled in developing software for mobile devices when it is launched in the UK and Europe later this year.

The iPhone is likely to kick-start the process of developing mobile-specific web content in earnest.

"The iPhone is likely to lead to significant rate increases for software developers skilled in creating websites optimised for 3G devices. Most websites currently cannot be viewed on wireless devices but the iPhone is likely to kick-start the process of developing mobile-specific web content in earnest."

"There is also strong demand from recruiters for developers skilled in Bluetooth and the dot-mobi tools that allow websites to be tailored for mobile devices."

This is great news for those that are already into developing .mobi compliant sites.

Without naming names, I know a couple of you have already developed .mobi standard apps for the iPhone and the Safari browser. Looks like you have a head start on the other programmers out there and are ahead of the learning curve. BRAVO!

Looks like it is time to get your resume in order. The internet knows no boundaries.

One note: the iPhone is not a 3G device.

You are 100% correct. This article specifically mentions the iPhone as being the catalyst for the demand not only for the iPhone demand but also for mobile devices and content providers in general.

Apple originally was not going to open up the Apple to third party applications. But when pre-launch testing met with a great deal of disappointing reviews, Steve Jobs back tracked and allowed this to proceed.

The EDGE network and AT&T were not the ideal match up for the iPhone. The night before this was launched, both Steve Jobs and the AT&T CEO (I think) were interviewed and that was basically the story, in a nutshell.

Both admitted to the numerous short comings of the network and the speed. Only on the night before the release.

And yes, there are a couple on this forum who have joined in on the iPhone apps and developing and have taken it to the next level.

Rates for contractors in the telecoms sector have risen by 16 per cent, from £37 per hour to £43 per hour, according to the research from Atsco and SkillsMarket.

That is pretty close to $80.00 per hour. That is still not much to some programmers, but I know a few that can knock out sites in less than an hour.

But overall, the demand appears to be huge for those that can do these types of projects.

With the release of the new iPod, being wi-fi and internet capable, Apple is bringing a better technology to the consumer with a faster service, if I read that correctly. It will also be using the Safari browser and most likely be opened to third party apps and developers.

So even if every site want to be a mobile site for ease of viewing, not just on the iPhone, does that not mean some changing in formatting and programming?

I am asking because this is not my realm and I know you program and develop. How is it a site like mobility.mobi can be 100% mobi compliant yet on the PC it is a full blown web site but on the cell it is still the full content...all the while being a 100% mobi compliant site? I ask this question purely for the sake of knowing because that to me seems to be a huge plus for whoever did the site.

I have about 4 browsers open. So I'll check back.

another note and possibly breaking news to .mobi lovers, iPhone doesn't need .mobi for Safari to shine, but rather specific html implementation as per Apple's guidelines here:

DocCom - thanks once again for turning an irrelevant iPhone development article into a .mobi source LOL
Thanks once again for showing your ass in a mobi thread regarding an article that specifically mentions iPhone being the catalyst for the need for .mobi developers.

Thank you for demonstrating a clear case difference between reading and reading comprehension.

Thank you for showing your total disdain and hatred for mobi once again that you can not see what is right in front of you and take it for what it is rather than what you don't want it to be or what you want it to be.

Thanks again for posting irrelevant articles to proclaim that iPhone is the death of mobi. when those articles were published and posted to begin with to inform and allow third party apps to be opened to the iPhone to improve and enhance the iPhone experience.

Thanks again for posting comments regarding the painfully slow edge technology and its short comings in relation to slow downloads and loading times of websites when the .mobi format loads in seconds.

Thanks again for confirming that Apple opened up their "closed-case" as Steve Jobs calls it to third party apps to improve the use and speed of apps.

Thanks again for posting articles confirming this to save me and all the other viewers time on how to use third party apps for the benefit of iPhone and the Safari browser.

Thank you for bringing a can of gasoline again to put out a mobi thread.

Most of all, thank you for keeping this thread going and mentioning .mobi.

Are we there yet? Can you feel the total disgust and hatred for me? for .mobi? for my dog?

Are we there yet?

Simply a joke to keep you coming back for more and more. What is it you really don't like? Your girl Samantha mentioned it is not so much .mobi as it is Doc Com?

If you want to stir the shit up, I'll be right in there with you.

Irrelevant? Did you read the article? Did you see the line:

"There is also strong demand from recruiters for developers skilled in Bluetooth and the dot-mobi tools that allow websites to be tailored for mobile devices."

Please don't bring your extreme hatred of .mobi to this board, otherwise you will lose credibility.

Hatred is the loser's attitude, it is harmful to your health also. Keep positive attitude and get a life.

I could not come up with better words for what is apparently going on with two threads now.

My commentary to the original article still stands as being informative and worthy of some to explore or hone up on developing skills for a mobile internet. I don't care what you want to call it, the need is there.

"This is great news for those that are already into developing .mobi compliant sites.
