We all saw the 250K for Malta.com and it was a good price for the buyer.

Malta.com written as Maltese people write it. Good.

What about other countries where the English version does NOT correspond with the way local people spell their Country name?

Good example are :

ITALY which Italian spell ITALIA and SPAIN which Spanish spell ESPANA...and then there would be an IDN character too in ESPANA to be precise.

What do you think worth more? Italy.com or Italia.com ?

depends on the site theme.
If you are offering services for italian residents, in italian, use italia.com
if you offer travel info or accomodation, or whatever, in english, use italy.com

I think is better italy.com than italia.com

italia.com will be used by an italian trader (in italian language)
italy.com will be used by all over the world (in other languages)

Great question - my guess would be that it's down to individual cases. There are more Spanish speakers in the world than people who speak English as their first language - so maybe espana.com would have greater value.

Italy is a different case with fewer Italian speakers than English speakers globally, so maybe italy.com would be worth more.

I knew I could trick you guys....

an Italian portal would not use any of them because in Italy , italians prefer to use .it, their own ccTLD so for a local website the choice will be:

Italia.it :)

But I think it`s a great point to think because this example can extended to many others and to IDNs too.
Many people worldwide give now granted that any people in the world prefer to use .coms.
Most of the times is true but there are some exceptions.

.com is a commercial domain

yes I agree, correct.

Does anyone know what would happen in India instead where they have more than 1 ext.?

.in
.co.in

I think .in would be more valuable but I`m not local so, experts about India please say your opinions, cheers.

i agree italia.com would almost have no traffic, if any, at all because of the uncommon language confusion to the target audience.
