google is very very very (very x100) rarely down, and even if it is, it will be up in no time!

Its almost never down for me. But if its down u can always go to google.co.uk , google.co.in get in..

can you imagine the redundant backup systems google has? i'm guessing the only thing bigger than the data center is larry and sergey's houses...

It has been down briefly a while back (at least for me, and yes, I then went to Google.ca), but unless you are monitoring it very closely (like every few minutes), you can't really tell. But yes it's very rare.
