oh no. I totally disagree. Internet is NOT shit. Of course there are fake information, misleading websites, BUT think about all what the internet made possible. The email system for instant is one of the most creative, effective, and practical communication systems in the World. The e-commerce in the first quarter of 2002 reached $14.4 BILLION us dollars in sales. Do you consider this "shit". Look at eLearning systems, it enabled people from all over the world to be ABLE to attend schools and colleges anywhere in the world. Think about the HUGE amount of information on the web. The author of that article claims that s/he can spend months looking for information over the internet (google) while s/he can go to "any public library" and find what s/he is looking for. I totally disagree with him/her on that. There is NO SINGLE library in the world that contains all the info the internet has. If s/he doesn't know how to search and find info on the internet, that doesn't mean the internet doesn't have it! And when we talk about the internet, we must think global. Think about all the services the internet provided to third-world-countries. Countries that have poor libraries, and lack advance education and technologies. The internet enabled normal average people to start online business and become millionaires. No, the internet is NOT shit. There is always good and bad in everything, but remember that the internet is what we make of it.

I think the creator of that site was angst-ridden and was seeking attention. :)

Remember the Sixties? Ok, most of you weren't even born yet. But all of you ARE familiar with it as it still holds tremendous sway over our cultures (US, UK, etc.) The analogy goes something like this: The idealists, visionaries, and dreamers that put the web together were very much like the idealists and dreamers of the Sixties. And now both sets of groups are either fond memories or are quite unable to affect or influence the direction or scope of their creation. Commercial interests--ourselves included!--are powering and controlling this electronic wonder which has become nothing more than another money making "Machine" driven by Adam Smith's "self-interest"! This is my take on it but "I could be wrong" (as Dennis Miller likes to say!) Someone, PLEASE, prove me wrong!

Email is positive. Worms, viruses, SPAM, failures (electric power, servers, computers, etc.) frustration, etc., all are negative.

Information available is positive. The proliferation of wrong information, the staggering amount of information that one has to sift through, the valuable time wasted, and the frustration, all are negative.

And with the legal pursuit of gain comes the illegal pursuit of gain: identity theft, internet scams, auction fraud, predatory porn, etc., etc., etc.

A very good analogy indeed!

rediculous piece of crap. not sure what their point it. the internet is not a substitute for human interaction. but it IS completely revolutionary and mind boggling.

think back 10 years ago (if you are old enough) and imagine how you would solve the simple problems that you can today - in a matter of minutes - using the internet.

sure there will always be SOME book, SOME morsel of information that doesn't make it onto the web. but does that mean the internet 'is shit' ? what-ever.

i think that person has a little too much spare time on their hands.

"It" should create lots of heated--passionate!--discussion. In that sense and maybe in that sense alone it's good!

(Good God, just look at how we are communicating back and forth here on this forum! It can be truly wonderous at times!)
