I've hired an SEO company for a client the last 6 months.

They were doing pretty well with ranking my client, up until Penguin 2 -- then
my client's rankings dropped about 20 positions for most keywords (the SEO company claimed
it wasn't their fault).

Now the SEO company is failing to restore my clients prior ranking my (client
hasn't gained anything for the last 6 weeks).

Question: Does this graph indicate what it seems to; that my client has
had a reduced number of backlinks added to their website since May -- or am I reading
it wrong?

Thank you in advance for any light you can shed on this.

I read it as you gained some and lost some

some of the lost links are due to that website (where your link was) being down

still, no seo can guarantee a "fixed" position, nor can they offer a guarantee for restoring to previous rank.

well, maybe they can make that claim, but since they don't "control" the SE's, then they cannot control the ranking within them.

sort of like the weather man guaranteeing their forecasts, sometimes they're spot on, and sometimes nature does her thing. :)

imo...

Thanks for reply Biggie. Yes, there have been losses and gains... but both graph show an overall decrease over the last two months or so.

From what I can determine, whatever the SEO company's methods were that were working pre-Google update, are no longer working (at least as well)
since the update.

Any other thoughts on this? I'm seriously considering switching to another wholesale SEO service -- would like any informed thoughts on this anyone can provide, to help me decide. Thank you.

I'd give them time to catch up to speed. By switching now, you may be doing more harm than good by adding the same relevancy of SEO previously done (don't know if that can hurt or damage you). Frankly ask if they're working on a solution to catch up with Google updates. One SEO company I used had a "link wheel" service, this no longer worked and they found out a "pyramid" worked better and changed to that doing studies and testing on their own shortly thereafter.

Looks to me like you just got beat out. If it was some kind of penalty then you would be in the depths of Google. Remember they are changing their algorithms ,what it takes to rank. Penguin addresses the anchor text as before, but not in the same way.

The link profile looks ok, the anchor text could improve and theres some (perhaps) on page problems too.

Best all time-all around SEO is to analysis your competitors site and backlinks and do that + one or two better things.

You need an SEO that understands what is going on with Google. If its a mystery with them, then it is time to move on.

That's a pretty unnatural backlink profile (way too much SEO anchor vs. URL as anchor or random text), no wonder Penguin hit hard. I would fire the SEO company.

Free advice:

donate your car nj (24%)
car donation nj (22%)

This is wrong. Bing likes it and ranks the site well, but that is because Bing is 2-3 years behind of Google.

David: I've asked the company a number of things, including what you suggested. I just get promises.
grace5: I agree with your statement ("Best all time-all around SEO is to analysis your competitors site and backlinks and do that + one or two better things.") and have been doing that.
tetrapak: I am going to be going with another SEO. My present one were doing pretty well before Penguin 2 hit, but have not increased my client's rankings (which dropped from #4 to 2nd and 3rd page) for 6 -7 weeks at ALL -- in fact, some have dropped further. And I am suspicious of what that graph shows as well.

Thank you all for your helpful replies.
