I am looking at selling a .co.uk domain name to a 3rd party and I need to do a quick transfer.

Nominet's official procedure is remarkably complex and convoluted.

Am I stuck with their procedure, or can I get around it e.g. by instigating a transfer to another registrar and changing the ownership details during the transfer? (similar to the way it was possible to beat NSI's ridiculous fax-notarized-transfer-form process)

Any specific advice you can give me is very welcome!

Apart from moving to Oxford, within walking distance of Nominet,
nope. :)

.uk domain transfers
In the event that you cannot transfer a .uk domain to 123-reg because the administrative contact is invalid, there are a couple of ways to get it amended so you can complete the transfer.

Option 1 - If the domain is currently assigned to a webhosting account with Host Europe, you may request an update to the contact information by filling in the Help Desk Request Form in your VCP (it must come through the VCP not by email).

Option 2 - Ask the registrant (legal owner) or current administrative contact of the domain to correct the email address for the administrative contact.
The registrant or current administrative contact should fax us on +44 115 9170442 and request the administrative contact details update.

The fax should be on headed paper, provide the new name, address, phone number and email address for the contact, and should be signed by someone authorised to update the domain registration. This would normally be either a director or company secretary if the domain is registered to a company, or the individual listed as the registrant.

If neither option is suitable, your transfer request can not be actioned.

None of that changes the legal owner of the domain name and so is irrelevant. What I said in reply to Genki still stands. All you'll do with what you quoted is move 'control' of the domain name to someone else, not legal ownership in the eyes of Nominet.

The only quick way of changing the registrant without having to go through all Nominet's crap is if the Nominet has not been paid for the domain. Nominet sends out bills at the end of the month, which are then paid approx a month later. Within this period Nominet will ammend the registrant details if you send a fax stating that a mistake was made and the name should be reg'd under xxxxxx. This normally takes only about a week.

Once the domain is paid for by the registrar - then you have to go through all the forms etc etc.
